It’s a brave new world. The Umbrella Academy has fallen with its members indecisive and scattering while the Sparrows have taken center stage forcing a fascist new regime in place even the United States Government is too afraid to oppose. Diego continues in his hero role, although Pogo notes criminals are being taken down faster than the system can hold them (rather than be murdered by Earth’s new heroes). And Five has decided it’s time to start fighting back foreshadowing a showdown (although not giving any clues as to why it would end any differently than the Academy getting wiped out by the Sparrows in their first encounter).

The new volume of Black Cat starts out with an amusing setup featuring a banged-up Felicia Hardy in the waiting room of the Night Nurse following a hard day which we’ll see a bit, all narrated by our protagonist. Fitting into larger Marvel Universe events, but not getting too wrapped up in them (although the Spider-Man cameo feels… odd), the comic can stand alone both as a fun one-off for curious readers and as a jumping off point for Felicia deciding on a change in career.

Throwback Tuesday takes us back 75 years to the 1950 thriller featuring Humphrey Bogart as the temperamental screenwriter Dixon Steele who local police wrongly believe is responsible for the murder of a young cocktail waitress (Martha Stewart) which leads to continued harassment, although the events of that night do introduce him to his lovely neighbor Laurel (Gloria Grahame) and the beginning of a love affair. Despite the amount of time spent on its aftermath, including a memorable scene in the police station where Dix is first questioned, it’s actually little more than an unusual setup to our two leads together.

All-New Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider #1

Returning with a pretty long title, Gwen Stacy returns. Despite the character’s relatively young timeline, she’s gone through quite a bit of changes since first appearing just over 10 years ago. The new comic resets Gwen, setting up both her and her dad in the main Marvel Universe with Gwen having used a Cosmic Cube to fix a few issues (such as returning her spider-powers). Now set up on Earth-616, and looking to put together a new band, she’s also struggling a bit with romance, and a new threat looming just out of reach.

There’s quite a bit (perhaps too much?) jammed into the second episode of the show’s Second Season. We get the school practicing Prank Day (which has minimal effect on the plot outside of a couple of scenes), the murder of Donovan Galpin (Jamie McShane), Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) visiting Tyler (Hunter Doohan) in the mental institution where he has been locked away, Bianca (Joy Sunday) being blackmailed into charming Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) into reaching out to her mother, Wednesday loosing her psychic abilities, and Wednesday needing to solve a mystery on the fly to rescue Enid (Emma Myers) from a secondary stalker (not the one previously discussed) which turns out to be a student (Evie Templeton) with the ability to become invisible.
