Batman/Superman #1

Batman/Superman #1 comic reviewThe new volume of Batman/Superman launches with Superman being called to Gotham City. A young boy has gone missing and all evidence points to the return of The Batman Who Laughs (Bruce Wayne from Earth-22 who was infected by that dimension’s Joker and has since become a hybrid of the two characters). Loose again on Earth-1, Batman and Superman team-up to find the missing boy and the villain who has teased the idea of turning all heroes into something just like him.

I was never really sold on the character of The Batman Who Laughs, but he’s largely absent here having already put his plan into motion. His choice of a new Robin creates much larger problems for The Dark Knight and the Man of Tomorrow when they realize Billy Batson (and his alter-ego) are now completely insane.

Ghost-Spider #1

Ghost-Spider #1 comic reviewWhile not quite as quick-witted as the final issues of Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider, the new series centered around Spider-Gwen leaving her own dimension to come to college and fight crime in New York gets a solid opening. If the first issue is any indication, it looks like the comic will split time between Gwen exploring her new home and events back in her dimension (which may eventually effect her new life).

Spider-Man guest-stars here playing the older brother, helping Gwen get into college, and offering a friendly shoulder when she needs it. However, unlike his appearance in the final issue of the previous series (where the comic had fun with his life being nearly as screwed up as Gwen’s) here Peter is a bit more in control and recast in more mentor than friend. (And the giant rat, while funny, is no swarm of Nazi dinosaur bees.)

The Boys - The Innocents TV review

In “The Innocents” Starlight (Erin Moriarty) continues to flex her muscles and push back against corporate’s attempt to control her forcing the company to take drastic action by throwing the Deep‘s (Chace Crawford) to the wolves by having him admit on-camera he was responsible for sexually assaulting America’s newest shinning star. Well, at least one of the assholes got what was coming to him. Meanwhile, the Boys go to Mesmer (Haley Joel Osment), a supe with the ability to read minds, in order to learn more about Kamiko (Momona Tamada). She calms down enough to give up a bit of her life story (after breaking one of the psychic’s hands). While the choice helps out the boys in the short-term it also foreshadows huge problems as Mesmer reaches out to an old friend about what he has learned. The show also leaves quite a bit on the cutting room floor by introducing, and then quickly moving on from, an intriguing character like Mesmer haunted by his ability to connect to people while being completely disconnected from his daughter.

Silver Surfer: Black #3

Silver Surfer: Black #3 comic reviewStill lost at the other end of a void, separated from his proper place in space and time, Norrin Radd will make a new friend and a dangerous discovery in Silver Surfer: Black #3 that will tie back to his past and the universe’s future.

The third issue of the mini-series allows the Silver Surfer to take his respite, as the continued use of his powers has led to trouble for our hero, and get to know a little more about Ego (who has its own trouble in a meteor that crashed deep within the living planet’s core). Providing assistance to Ego, in return for the help the planet has given him, will lead to a dangerous discovery deep at the planet’s core where Norrin Radd will discover the incubator of Galactus (the creature who has ravaged the universe for eons and is also resposinble for Radd’s transformation into the first Herald).
