A leftover spell from Doctor Strange calls forth a new group of Defenders in Defenders: Beyond #1. We begin with the reluctant Blue Marvel and add a confused America Chavez looking for answers about her past, a female Loki (obviously meant to remind readers about the Loki TV-show) who alone seems to relish the adventure, the mostly non-descript Taaia, and the Avenger Tigra. We don’t get into what the threat is large enough to call on the Defenders as the first issue is mainly about the reluctant characters (all except for Loki) being forced together into action by events well outside of their control.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – All Those Who Wander

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds overcorrects the follow up to the all too cute “The Elysian Kingdom” with a horror episode that brings back the Gorn and sees the exit of not one but two major characters. Certainly better than the previous episode, “All Those Who Wander” goes a bit too far to the other side of the spectrum with an Alien-esque story of Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and a handful of other character skulking around a crashed ship avoiding rabid alien creatures who impregnate their hosts and burst out of their bodies. The results are memorable, if nearly as far from classic Trek tone as the previous episode.

Daredevil #1

Matt Murdock is dead to the world as Daredevil (who no one remembers is Matt Murdock) and Elektra prepare to leave New York and take their fight to the Hand. Before leaving the city, however, Daredevil spends one final night fighting crime with Spider-Man and tying up various loose ends. There’s not as much Daredevil/Spidey interaction as I would have liked here (especially between two men who have made deals with devils to hide their secret identities), but the pairing still works.

The Mandalorian #1

A straightforward adaptation of the first episode of The Mandalorian, The Mandalorian #1 is exactly what you would expect introducing us to bounty hunter Din Djarin and his acceptance of the job which will change his life forever. Fans of the character may enjoy themselves, and there is enjoyment in seeing the character come to life on the comic page, but nothing new is added here, or given more depth or insight, which might pur you to seek it out.

All five seasons of the MacGyver reboot are collected here featuring Lucas Till as Angus MacGyver working for the covert Phoenix Foundation solving problems all over the world with the help of his friends Jack (George Eads), Riley (Tristin Mays), Bowser (Justin Hires), and in later seasons Desi (Levy Tran) and Russ Taylor (Henry Ian Cusick).

More high-tech than the original MacGyver, often with some kind of hacking need by Riley, the reboot saw more team action in the field but still worked in MacGyver’s various on-the-fly inventions to get out of tough jams. The show was hit hard by the COVID-19 outbreak, which was worked into an episode after filming began again,  leading to some shortened and truncated final seasons.
