Star Wars Adventures #31

Star Wars Adventures #31 comic reviewStar Wars Adventures #31 gives us a Rey and Poe Dameron team-up as Rey lives out a long fantasy of spending time flying a working X-Wing and gets some piloting pointers from the Resistance’s best pilot in this all-ages adventure.

The banter between the pair, something not seen much in the sequel films, is the best part of the story. As many of these stories do, “Squad Goals” brings in characters from other corners of the Star Wars galaxy. Issue #31 brings back the buzz droids from Revenge of the Sith who attack Rey and Poe while training as Rey proves an able student for Poe (even if her mentor only destroyed one Death Star).

Scooby-Doo! - Mine Your Own Business TV review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to Scooby Doo, Where Are You! for another mystery involving some meddling kids and their talking dog. A wrong turn leads Mystery, Inc. to the nearly deserted Gold City where locals and guests have been scared off by the Miner Forty-Niner, the ghost of an old prospector still searching for gold. It turns out the Miner is neither a ghost nor looking for gold, but oil hidden below the town. The Miner is one of the more forgettable monsters from the show’s run, although the episode does have some moments such as Scooby-Doo (Don Messick) and Shaggy (Casey Kasem) faking a train in the mine as part of one of the gang’s least complicated traps to catch a ghost.

Darth Vader #2

Darth Vader #2 comic reviewThe unexpected appearance of a familiar face rocks the Dark Lord of the Sith as Darth Vader #2 picks up from the first-issue cliffhanger of Darth Vader coming face-to-face with Padme Amidala. As expected, the woman is revealed to be Sabé (the former Queen of Naboo’s doppelganger and bodyguard). Although, in my opinion, artist Raff Ienco could have made her look a little more like Keira Knightley.

Issue #2 offers quite a bit of art, but not much story. Many of the panel’s focus on Vader’s remembrance of his lost love brought back into focus of seeing someone wearing her face years later. Despite neither trusting each other, the pair find a mutual bond in wanting to know the truth about happened to Amidala (although the way the events have played out since then we know for certain Darth Vader never learned the full truth about the final moments of Padme’s life).

Young Justice #14

Young Justice #14 comic reviewThings are getting a bit crowded. Foreshadowed at the end of the previous issue, Young Justice #14 catches up with Impulse recruiting other young heroes for Young Justice’s fight against. S.T.A.R. Labs. Looking to include as many characters from various versions of the team as possible, the latest issue features panels of Impulse recruiting the likes of Aqualad, Spoiler, Arrowette, and Sideways to go along with the current team, Naomi, the Wonder Twins, and Dial H for Hero.

In terms of an event comic, there’s some fun here (particularly in Bart’s recruitment). Once assembled the comic feels a bit rushed with the combined heroes making short work of what Dr. Glory can throw in their path. The evil scientist is also thwarted in Skartaris where some late-arriving help prevents Superboy from getting skewered by a Kryptonite sword.
