M3GAN 2.0

Far more action-comedy than horror-thriller, M3GAN 2.0 is an incredibly silly film. I don’t know if there’s a suspenseful moment in the entire movie as writer/director Gerard Johnstone leans hard into comedy, but there is some wacky fun to be had in a script that seems to have a very mixed message about the rise of Artificial Intelligence. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw reprise their roles of Gemma and Cady from the first film who are forced to bring M3GAN (Jenna Davis) back when an even deadlier android based on the M3GAN designs, and built as an assassin for the military, goes haywire and begins following her own agenda including killing anyone tied to her creation.

Ironheart – Take Me Home

Originally planned for a 2023 release, Dominique Thorne reprises her role of Riri Williams from Wakanda Forever who, for no real reason, left the comforts of Wakanda at the end of the movie despite it being obviously the perfect place for her to continue her education. As the series needs to break the character down, in terms of the story it wants to tell, that means we’re reintroduced to Riri as a struggling college student at MIT who, despite her intelligence and skill, relies on under-the-table deals to fix other students’ projects for the money needed to explore her own interest of recreating an Iron Man suit (which, she already accomplished in Wakanda, and also again at MIT).

For their latest, Pixar delivers a story about a young boy who has to be abducted by aliens to learn about friendship and family. Following the death of his parents, a lonely Elio (Yonas Kibreab) struggles to connect with his aunt (Zoe Saldaña) or make friends while becoming obsessed with the idea of alien life and traveling to the stars to escape a world where he doesn’t seem to belong. Eventually Elio gets his wish when his message to outer space is overheard and he finds himself among ambassadors of a federation of planets, so to speak, known as the Communiverse (a moniker that is as awkward spoken aloud as it looks in print).

New Avengers #1

While not being all that sure about the current state of the Marvel Universe, although it seems that Doctor Doom has become a major player again just in time to lead into some cross-promotional movie tie-ins, we start with Black Widow recruiting the Winter Soldier to look into a former lumber camp turned experimental laboratory in the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. And for added backup, Bucky enlisted the help of the less-hairy Wolverine and his old war buddy Namor. For a guy who says he hates teams, Bucky sure knows how to assemble deadly ones.

How to Train Your CGI Dragon

If it’s good enough for Disney, I guess. From a filmmaking feat answering the question of can we make a live-action remake (featuring a hell of a lot of CGI) of an animated movie, the existence of the new How to Train Your Dragon makes sense. Outside of that, I’m not really sure what we’re doing here. Much like the vast majority of Disney’s remakes, DreamWorks’ first attempt delivers a fine, if less slightly less magical, version of the original.
