The Good Place - Jason Mendoza

The relief Eleanor (Kristen Bell) feels at discovering she isn’t the only one mistakenly let into heaven is short lived as she discovers Jianyu (Manny Jacinto) isn’t so much a wise Buddhist monk but a failed idiot DJ from Jacksonville, Florida, named Jason Mendoza. Tired of living a lie, something we see Jason did plenty of in his old life, Jianyu nearly comes clean to the entire community forcing Eleanor to take drastic action to prevent the truth from coming out and getting both herself and Jianyu sent to Hell.

Marvel's Luke Cage - Moment of Truth

“Moment of Truth” is a problematic first episode which doesn’t completely sell me on Marvel’s latest television series. For a series supposedly centered around its title character, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) himself is mostly sleepwalking through the series premiere of the new Netflix series. Even what we do see of the character, introduced previously as a recurring character in Jessica Jones, such as his low-key life as a dishwasher and barbershop janitor will be thrown completely out the window by the end of the first episode when the corruption and violence around him will finally force Luke to take a stand. Instead we get teases about the character’s unexplored past while most of “Moment of Truth” works on world building and setting up the various characters of Harlem. While its possible some of this work may eventually pay off down the line over the series’ 13 episodes, we’re not given much to suggest that its probable that will be the case.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Meet the New Boss

Continuing to lay the groundwork for later episodes, “Meet the New Boss” is most notable for introducing Jeffrey Mace (Jason O’Mara) as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Along with filling us in that the job could have been Coulson’s if he wanted it, the latest episode also reveals a good working relationship between the two men (which could be tested in the next few weeks). While the government inspection of the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility provides most of the episode’s humor, and allows Coulson to geek out when called up, it takes up quite a bit of air time without offering any immediate payoff (other than to suggest O’Mara’s character is based on the comic character of the same name).

The Big Bang Theory - The Military Miniaturization

“The Military Miniaturization” is a fine, if forgettable, episode. In the main story Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Sheldon (Jim Parsons), and Howard (Simon Helberg) fret over the ethical implications surrounding the Air Force’s offer to fund their research. The back-up story features a pissed-off Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) learning that Penny (Kaley Cuoco) accidentally spilled the beans about her pregnancy to her coworkers (possibly costing her lead on a big project). The episode’s only real stand-out moment comes when Sheldon reacts silently to the Air Forces pitch (although the scene would have been more memorable had the scientist been able to keep his silence throughout the entire sequence).
