In a World...

Premiering at Sundance earlier this year first-time writer/director Lake Bell‘s In a World… quickly became a critical darling taking home the festival’s award for screenwriting. I’ve been largely unimpressed with Bell and her forgettable career which includes one of the worst comedies I ever had the misfortune to sit through, so I can definitely understand her reasoning for wanting to but together the kind of role no one else was offering her.

As the film of a first time director In a World… shows promise and centering the story around the largely untapped world of voice-over artists gives the otherwise by-the-numbers romantic comedy something of an unique feel. Bell’s time in the industry also allows her to put together a pretty strong indie cast of familiar faces.

But despite the intriguing set-up and good performances, most of the promise of In a World… is unfulfilled. Bell’s creativity in one part of the story is balanced by laziness in another as she fails to do much other than offer up what amounts to a slightly better than average romcom.

The Blacklist - Frederick Barnes

Despite still blaming him for framing her husband (Ryan Eggold) for murder, Agent Keen (Megan Boone) is forced to work with Reddington (James Spader) to take down a member of The Blacklist responsible for the chemical attack on Washington D.C. subway by a chemical engineer named Frederick Barnes (Dr. James Wilson) who has very personal reasons for unleashing a rare disease upon the populace. Keen and Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) talk with the man’s former research partner (Amy Hargreaves) whose son suffers from the same rare disease Barnes weaponized and unleashed in the subway and learn the scientist is actually the boy’s father and was turned down for research grants to cure the disease when it was determined it was too rare to justify the funding.

Nashville - It Must Be You

Love and Polo dominate the latest episode of Nashville as several unlikely characters make their way to a charity Polo match including Rayna (Connie Britton) and Tandy (Judith Hoag) who hope to use the event to drum up a partner to help buy out her contract, the ever-campaigning Teddy (Eric Close), Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) who is surprised to learn where her invitation came from, and Deacon (Charles Esten) who is dragged to the event by his new girlfriend Megan (Christina Chang).

Daredevil #32

Daredevil #32Daredevil #32 begins with the anticlimactic result of the Jester‘s trap (which, as expected, is so obviously false it’s dispensed with in only a handful of panels). Mark Waid tries to see the humor in a villain refusing to believe Matt Murdock is truly blind, but the macabre nature of a lynched Foggy Nelson doll simply doesn’t work on any level.

From these humble beginnings the comic picks up as Daredevil enlists the help of Dr. Strange for information about the Sons of the Serpent and the cult’s magic book which offers the opportunity for a funny, if immensely cheap, stab at the people of Kentucky.

The comic ends with Daredevil interrupting a good ‘ol Southern lynch mob only to later realize the group is after actual monsters and he may have chosen the wrong side. The result is a somewhat forced Halloween adventure that ends in yet another cliffhanger and more trouble and no new answers for our hero. For fans.

“I needed you to be wrong about him.”

The Blacklist - Gina Zanetakos

After having it out over the box under their floorboards Tom (Ryan Eggold) agrees to turn himself over to the FBI in order to prove his innocence. With Agent Keen (Megan Boone) suspended and sent home, Malik (Parminder Nagra) begins the interrogation of Elizabeth’s husband. Reaching out, Reddington (James Spader) informs Lizzie that if she wants answers she needs to find Gina Zanetakos (Margarita Levieva), a member of The Blacklist who specializes in untraceable corporate terrorism and, if Reddington is to be believed, she is also Tom’s mistress.
