Daredevil: Dark Nights #8The final arc of the eight-issue anthology mini-series comes to a close as Daredevil sets out to save Misty Knight from her Cuban drug lord ex-boyfriend. It also offers a flashback of the series of events leading up to Knight loosing her arm and requiring a bionic replacement.

Separated for most of the issue, Daredevil: Dark Nights #8 doesn’t offer much in the way of banter between the two heroes. And although she gets to do a little butt-kicking in the final few panels (including saving Daredevil from Carmen Averez), I’m a little disappointed that Misty Knight spends so much of the final issue of the series as the damsel in distress.

Daredevil: Dark Nights may not have delivered great stories over its eight-issue run, but the adventures of Matt Murdock had their moments and I’m sorry to see the series coming to an end as Marvel gears up to a big February relaunch of several of their core titles (including Daredevil). For fans.

Ever wonder what Chuck would have looked like as an action-drama if taken 100% seriously. Yeah, me neither. However, much like they did with taking Psych‘s basic concept and creating The Mentalist, CBS is now giving us a straight drama about a spy walking around with all the government’s secrets neatly tucked away in his head. Working for United States Cyber Command (which is a real organization stuck with a ridiculous name which makes you think they work with Megaforce) Josh Holloway stars as Gabriel Vaughn, an advanced intelligence agent with super-computer microchip in his brain.

Lone Survivor

Lone Survivor

Based on Marcus Luttrell‘s (Mark Wahlberg) personal accounts, Lone Survivor chronicles a mission in the Hindu Kush mountain region of Afghanistan to find and kill high ranking Taliban member. Of the four-man initial team, and the first group sent in to retrieve them, Luttrell would be the sole survivor.

After a brief introduction to life on the base and the various Navy SEALS (most of whom will play only ancillary roles to the main tale) the film moves forward with the introduction and deployment of Luttrell, Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Dietz (Emile Hirsch), and Axelson (Ben Foster). Arriving at their destination without incident, the mission takes a turn for the worse when they are discovered by three locals.

Cut off from HQ, and with no standing orders for such a situation (something which seems a tad odd), the foursome argue over how to proceed knowing any chance of their mission succeeding means the death of the old man and two boys which the team is unwilling to do.

Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril #6

Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril #6Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril comes to a close with a perfunctory final issue where the various issues raised over the course of the mini-series (the fate of Tom Strong‘s daughter in childbirth, the disease ravaging the alternate Earth known as Terra Obscura, and Val Var Gram contracting the disease) are all wrapped-up without much fuss.

Because so much is covered (much off-panel) in the final issue Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril #6 feels more like an epilogue to Tom and Val’s adventure together than an actual final issue to the series. Several of the characters the pair met get cameos here, and there is some fun to be had, but those expecting a big payoff are likely to be disappointed as the various problems of Tom, Val, and Terra Osbscura have all fought dovetail so neatly they pretty much solve themselves.

Even if this is the weakest issue of the mini-series it still has some fun moments, strong (pun intended) character interactions, and the kind of off-beat humor you would expect. For fans.
