Good, but not Perfect

  • Title: The Life and Times of Mr. Perfect
  • IMDB: link

If you watched wrestling in the 80’s and 90’s you know the name Mr. Perfect.  The latest from WWE Home Video is a collection of the wrestler’s matches from his early days in AWA, to his run as and Intercontinental Champion for the WWE, to his career with WCW.  10 matches are included on two discs along with a documentary of the man, who while in the ring, was always Perfect.

The highlight of this two-disc set is the documentary on Curt Henning‘s career, struggle with injuries, and his premature death at the age of 44.  Included here are interviews with friends, family, and co-workers all of whom praise Henning, both as an in-ring performer and as man.

Not Truly, Truly Outrageous

  • Title: Jem – Down to Earth

You’ve probably heard the music of Welsh singer/songwriter Jem, even if you don’t realize it.  Her songs have been used on various American TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Wonderfalls, Six Feet Under, and others.

With her second album Jem returns with a new collection of eclectic sounds mixing various music styles into her own sound.  The Welsh singer with a mix of pop, electronica, dance, hip hop, and soul, may not be your cup of tea, but at least she’s not processed inane tween pop.

This second album includes twelve tracks including the title track Down to Earth with its strong Middle Eastern beat.  Also included here are the uplifting It’s Amazing, the heavy electronica dance track Aciid!, and the softer Norah Jones-like piano tune You Will Make It.

My favorite of the tracks would have to be the catchy Latin flavored track “I Want You To…,” where the electronica influence isn’t quite as heavy as on some of the other songs.

You’ve got to seriously like many different styles of music to enjoy this CD which mixes and matches thoroughly throughout.  You can check out her official site here, and download the title track Down to Earth for free.  Jem’s music might not be for everbody, but for something a little different it’s worth a listen.

Righteous Kill

“This thing is a clusterfuck to end all clusterfucks.”

Turk (Robert De Niro) and Rooster (Al Pacino) are two warhorse detectives for the NYPD.  We learn early on that they’re good cops who take the job seriously, but aren’t above taking shortcuts for justice when the courts let them down.

Things get sticky for Turk, who presents the tale from a taped video through a serious of flashbacks, when a recent string of deaths begin to lead back to him.  His Lieutenant (Brian Dennehy) and the cops working the case (John Leguizamo, Donnie Wahlberg) believe they have a cop serial killer on their hands, with Turk being the most likely suspect.

The film centers on De Niro’s character, his job, and his unhealthy relationship with a crime scene investigator (Carla Gugino).  There are also subplots involving the cops trying to take down a local drug dealer (50 Cent) with the help of a lawyer (Trilby Glover), and a woman (Melissa Leo) whose daughter was brutally killed by her boyfriend.

Burn After Reading

“I thought you might be worried about the security, of your shit.”

Burn After Reading, written and directed by the Coen Brothers, is a thriller set in a world not too far from Dumb & Dumber.  It’s a tale of secrets, lies, and murder through an idiot lens.  It’s an interesting idea that struggles at becoming a good film.

The story centers around a recently fired CIA agent (John Malkovich) with a bad temper whose memoirs wind up in the hands of two dumb gym employees (Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt).  After being attacked the first time the pair attempt to return the disk their plans turn towards blackmail or to selling the dubious contents to the Russians.  As to why the film chooses the Russians, well, the joke is obvious though the rationale (like so much in the film) is not.

“I think that you have as much of a chance of having a sexual relationship with Penny as the Hubble telescope does of discovering at the center of every black hole is a little man with a flashlight searching for a circuit breaker.”

Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) are nerds.  The pair’s apartment is filled with all range of comic, fantasy and sci-fi merchandise.  They work as physicists and spend their spare time with fellow geeks Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Howard (Simon Helberg) in a variety of activities guaranteed to keep the ladies in galaxies far, far away.  Their universe is changed by the arrival of a beautiful new neighbor, Penny (Kaley Cuoco), to whom Leonard instantly develops a crush.

Their universe, much to Sheldon’s dismay, is changed by Penny’s arrival, but whether anything romantic will develop between Leonard and Penny will have to wait until season two.
