Following the tense and dramatic “Memento Mori,” Star Trek: Strange New Worlds shift gears for a far lighter episode featuring the Enterprise in space dock that turns out to be the best episode of the series so far. The title of the episode comes from the arrival of Spock’s fiancé T’Pring (Gia Sandhu). In an attempt to bridge the gap between them and understand each other’s position, the Vulcans take part in a ritual that unintentionally swaps their consciousness into each other’s bodies. Despite neither being happy about it, hijinks ensue as Spock (who is actually T’Pring in Spock’s body) is needed in delicate trade negotiations with the R’ongovian Protectorate and T’Pring (who is actually Spock in T’Pring’s body) is called into duty to help with a Vulcan who will only meet with her.

The fifth issue of Usagi Yojimbo: Lone Goat and Kid reprints the story “The Way of the Samurai” in which the choice to save a messenger on the road leads to an encounter with the famous General Oyaneko. While on a walk through the town, Oyaneko tells Miyamoto Usagi of his service to Lord Higashi and the troubles of later serving the Lord’s son Hirone leading him to be assigned as an administrator for a peaceful town and a slow death far from the action of his youth.

Cyrano de Bergerac, the 19th Century play by Edmond Rostand, has been adapted more than two dozen times over the years for film and television (including a new version starring Peter Dinklage). By far, my favorite take on the story of the remarkable man with wit, cunning, athleticism, the heart of a poet, and an comedically large nose that keeps him from sharing his affections with the one he loves, came in the form of 1987’s Roxanne released in theaters 35 years ago.

Steve Martin stars as Charlie “C.D.” Bales, the fire chief of one of the most inept fire departments in the country. Into his life walks Roxanne (Daryl Hannah), far more than a pretty face, as a beautiful astronomy PhD student renting a home in the small town from C.D.’s god-daughter Dixie (Shelley Duvall) while mending a broken heart and searching the stars for a comet.

The Harder They Fall

  • Title: The Harder They Fall

Although fictional, writer/director Jeymes Samuel‘s film is inspired by real outlaws, cowboys, and lawmen of color from the Wild West. The primary character of The Harder They Fall is Nat Love (Jonathan Majors). Tormented as a boy by outlaw Rufus Buck (Idris Elba), Love has grown into an outlaw who hunts and kills other outlaws while still seeking revenge for the massacre of his family.

With Majors and Elba, Samuel has the two pillars he needs to make the film work while surrounding each man with an assortment of strong characters played by the likes of Zazie Beetz, Edi Gathegi, Danielle Deadwyler, Regina King, LaKeith Stanfield, RJ Cyler, and Delroy Lindo. When circumstances allow the Buck Gang to free their leader, Rufus Buck returns to the western town of Redwood. This puts Nat Love, and his friends, and Rufus Buck, and his gang, on a collision course for an extended shoot-out on the Main Street of Redwood.
