We Are Lady Parts - Represent / Sparta

The final two episodes of the first, and perhaps only, season of the witty and heartfelt We Are Lady Parts revolve around the release and backlash of social media influencer Zarina’s (Sofia Barclay) article about the band that no only outs Amina (Anjana Vasan) to her friends but also paints the group as anti-Muslim radicals leading to a crushing wave of social media hate landing on the band. The fact that article hits on an already emotional day for Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) leads to the implosion of the band, Amina returning to her pre-Lady Parts life, and leaving Momtaz (Lucie Shorthouse) to pick up the pieces and try to put the band back together.

Usagi Yojimbo #22

Miyamoto Usagi‘s travels with his cousin Yukichi Yamamoto continue in part one of “Ransom” as the two wanderers have mad their way out of Lord Hikiji’s province only to run into new trouble when their paths cross those of Kitsune and Kiyoko. It doesn’t take the young warrior long to discover the sneakiness of the two thieves as they tease Yukichi before showing the travelers the thieves’ latest score: a ledger of corruption and payoffs.

There’s some fun here at Yukichi’s expense as the naïve young warrior sees a bit more of the world than he was expecting in a pair of thieves who seem to periodically show up just to drive Usagi crazy.

Rick and Two Crows - Rickmurai Jack television review

After an extended anime-style opening sequence that follows up on Rick‘s (Justin Roiland) adventures with two crows, Rick and Morty kicks off the season finale by returning to the Citadel of Ricks to cure Morty (Roiland) of his grandson’s attempts to emotionally blackmail him and finally shed some light on the ultimate goals of Evil Morty (Roiland). The opening is crazy, but dealt with fairly quickly to move onto to an adventure which will touch on several past moments of the series and, perhaps, leave Morty and Rick with a better understanding of each other.

Paddington

Paddington movie reviewThrowback Tuesday takes us back to 2014’s Paddington, written and directed by Paul King who succeeded in adapting Michael Bond’s character into one of the most complete, magical, and lovable family films of the 2000s. The term “family film” can often be a derogatory phrase for a movie that cuts corners, goes lowbrow, or oversimplifies in an attempt to hit an all-ages market. Paddington, not unlike classic Disney films, reminds us of what the genre can be.

The story follows a talking bear (a thoroughly believable CGI character voiced by Ben Whishaw) from Darkest Peru to London in hopes of finding a new family. Discovered at Paddington Station, the renamed Paddington is taken in the Brown family while more permanent accommodations are arranged. Despite the concerns of Mr. Brown (Hugh Bonneville) and the various trouble a bear gets into while trying to make sense of his new surroundings, he quickly wins over the rest of the family (Sally Hawkins, Madeleine Harris, and Samuel Joslin) providing enough time for the bear to search for the explorer (Tim Downie) who met his family decades ago and seems like the most viable suspect to give Paddinton an home.

Usagi Yojimbo: The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy #1

Usagi Yojimbo: The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy #1 comic reviewIDW continues to collect old Usagi Yojimbo stories and release them in color for the first time. Usagi Yojimbo: The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy #1 offers the retelling of the first chapter of “The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy,” originally released in the late 1980s Fantagraphics Usagi Yojimbo run. Although Miyamoto Usagi does appear in the issue, as one of three separate weary travelers struggling through the rain (the other two being Gen and Zato-Ino), his entrance to the story comes rather late.

The story of Chapter One involves Lord Noriyuki sending Tomoe Ame to investigate the unusual activity of his neighbor Lord Tamakuro who seems to be stockpiling warriors and weapons for some unknown purpose. Tomoe confirms her lord’s suspicions by discovering rifles and gunpowder but is captured before she can report back (which is where our rabbit ronin steps into the tale).
