Astro City #43

Astro City #43 comic reviewDuring this latest volume of Astro City we’ve seen the Broken Man pop-up from time to time with important messages directed to the reader. What we haven’t seen, until now, is someone interrupt and hijack one of the omnipotent figure’s tales. That’s what happens in Astro City #43 when his tale about the Gentleman, the Bouncing Beatnik, and Lord Saampa is interrupted by the Gentleman’s daughter Tillie (who has her own amazing story to tell).

Breaking the fourth wall completely and talking both to the Broken Man and to the audience, Tillie steers the story towards her father, the super-hero known as the Gentleman. In doing so we learn something very interesting about this young girl who doesn’t age and how her father burst on the scene as a hero of Astro City.

Samurai Jack - Episode XCVII television review

Ashi‘s (Tara Strong) search for Samurai Jack (Phil LaMarr) leads her through the show’s past as characters from several episodes are referenced, including the Three Blind Archers, the Woolies, and the Ravers – each with their own tale of Jack’s heroics, and even a bar full of Aku’s former minions. It’s a fun walk down memory lane for fans of the show, while also serving the purpose of confirming Ashi’s change of heart concerning the samurai leading the young woman to literally washing away the last vestiges of connection to Aku (Greg Baldwin). Her journey eventually leads her to a hopeless samurai prepared to commit seppuku, spurred on by the words of the mysterious Horseman.

iZombie - Zombie Knows Best TV review

One of the goofier episodes for Liv (Rose McIver) and Major (Robert Buckley) turns out to be one of the most dramatic for Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin). Helping the detective with the double-murder, Liv and Major chow down on the brains of a father and his teenage daughter causing all kinds of bizarre behavior among the group. Buckley may have missed his calling, as he’s terrific as the self-absorbed teenage girl. The case eventually uncovers a seedy motive for the crime involving the girl’s best friend and her screwed-up home life.

Rick and Morty - The Rickshank Redemption TV review

In a surprise move, Cartoon Network decided to air the Third Season premiere of Rick and Morty on April 1st. And they kept airing it, over and over, causing more than a few viewers to wonder what the hell was going on and why new episodes for a show viewers had been waiting more than a decade to see was preempted by one fans had been waiting a few months for. Detaching my disappointment for no Samurai Jack (grrr….), I’ll admit that “The Rickshank Redemption” is a bizarrely good time as Rick (Justin Roiland) breaks out of prison and rescues Summer (Spencer Grammer) and Morty (Roiland) from the Citadel of Ricks by body-swapping his way through an ingenious plan that leaves bodies everywhere (and Rick sadly without the ability to improv).

Star Wars Rebels - Zero Hour TV review

It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Using his knowledge of Agent Kallus‘ (David Oyelowo) treachery, Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) springs his trap and sends the fleet to Atollon as the Rebels prepare to attack Lothal. Using an Imperial blockage complete with Interdictors, Thrawn traps both Phoenix Squadron and General Dodonna‘s (Michael Bell) Massassi Group at Atollon as his forces push their advantage. In a last-ditch effort, Ezra (Taylor Gray) manages to escape the blockade and seek help from an old friend.
