Rick and Morty - Pickle Rick television review

After turning himself into a pickle to avoid family therapy, Rick (Justin Roiland) has one hell of a day. What starts out as a cute, if bizarre, premise of Rick rolling around the garage bench celebrating his pickleness soon turns dark for the pickle man who gets washed into the sewer. One of the bloodiest episodes of the series, “Pickle Rick” showcases Rick murdering dozens of rats for their body parts in order to construct an exoskeleton and make it out of the sewer. Climbing out of the toilet of a foreign embassy full of gun-totting fools, Rick’s day of murder (involving knives, lasers, explosives, and Home Alone-style murder traps) has just begun.

Throwback Thursday takes us back to the adventures of the time-displaced samurai and his quest to make his way home. Noble sacrifice is a common theme in Samurai Jack, and in “Episode VII” Jack (Phil LaMarr) must decide between travelling home or freeing those trapped under the curse of Aku (Mako). Learning about the Well of Ozric, a portal with the ability to send the samurai home, Jack heads for the tower but finds the three archers more than enough to stop an entire army in its tracks. What hope does the samurai have?

Focused on the mental toll of being Wonder Woman, the latest issue offers us flashbacks to the first time Diana was forced to give something up to be the Amazon that Themyscira needed. We also get a day in the life of Wonder Woman and the strain she feels unable to share with her friends and co-workers while putting out fires around the world and shielding as many as possible from harm.

For Throwback Thursday we look back at one of my favorite episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. While the Joker was appeared in more than two-dozen episodes (and a couple of movies), another of Batman’s most notable adversaries was give far-less screentime. “If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Rich?” offers us the origins of the Riddler (John Glover). After software designer Edward Nygma is screwed out of his proceeds from the best-selling video game he created, the man disappears only to pop-up later as a super-villain taking advantage of the game’s popularity to attack Daniel Mockridge (Gary Frank) using both riddles and the theme park created from the game as a weapon against his former boss.

Dark Matter - All the Time in the World TV review

Owing more than a little inspiration from Groundhog Day, the first-half of “All the Time in the World” is perfect. Trapped in a time-loop forcing him to relive the same day over and over again, a frustrated Three (Anthony Lemke) struggles to convince the crew of the Raza what is happening and find a way to break the loop. There are several smart choice here, including starting with Three already stuck in the loop after several days and the use of the “Butterfly Effect” to explain the differences caused by his choices every time through the loop. Then there’s the incredulity of his crewmates and the various ways he attempts, and fails, to convince them of the truth (including learning French). It’s the best use of the concept I’ve seen on television since Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s “Cause and Effect.”
