Hawkeye – So This Is Christmas?

  • Title: Hawkeye – So This Is Christmas?

Hawkeye doesn’t skimp on action in the finale was we get Kate (Hailee Steinfeld) vs. Yelena (Florence Pugh), Echo (Alaqua Cox) taking some vengeance, and our two archers struggling to stay alive against wave after wave of baddies thrown their way by the Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). There’s trick arrows, characters jumping off a buildings, and the Kingpin shrugging off everyone’s best shots. Hell, even the ridiculous swordsman gets into the action, albeit not on the side you would expect given events of previous episodes.

The Worst Person in the World

If there’s a weakness for me in writer/director Joachim Trier‘s The Worst Person in the World it’s that I never come to love the lead character of Julie (Renate Reinsve) nearly as much as the writer nor the characters who cross her path. Don’t get me wrong, Reinsve is terrific here in the role of a woman who abandons careers and relationships at the drop of a hat while searching blindly for something she can never quite articulate. I’m never won over to root for or against Julie’s choices; I’m simply along for the ride.

It’s in the small moments of Julie stumbling through life, largely without any self-reflection or regard to more than the moment, that the movie provides some of its most memorable scenes, such as an unexpected slow-motion sequence that highlights the delight of potential new love versus that which been worn down with age.

The Book of the Mandalorian – Return of the Mandalorian

  • Title: The Book of Boba Fett – Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian
  • wiki: link

For the first of two episodes The Mandalorian hijacks the six-episode run of The Book of Boba Fett. Hey, it’s only fair given Boba Fett‘s (Temuera Morrison)  attempts to upstage on the character on his own show, right? As an episode of The Mandalorian, “Return of the Mandalorian” makes sense (even if it feels like a step backward for the character). As an episode of The Book of Boba Fett, it feels very much out of place. But, seeing how The Mandalorian is the superior show, I’m willing to enjoy the ride.

Wolf Like Me – Episode 1

  • Title: Wolf Like Me – Episode 1
  • IMDb: link

The opening episode of Wolf Like Me introduces us to widower and struggling single father Gary (Josh Gad) who literally crashes into Mary (Isla Fisher) in a car accident. Aside from having a way to calm Gary’s emotionally-troubled daughter (Ariel Donoghue), Mary also catches Gary’s attention for her kind ear and odd behavior. The show’s opener teases the idea of Mary’s condition, more strongly in the final minute where she races home hoping to beat sundown and lock herself away, without confirming she is indeed a werewolf.
