Parallel Mothers

  • Title: Parallel Mothers

For a film that centers around a plot point that would be right at home in any soap opera, Parallel Mothers provides a surprisingly strong drama. Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit are strangers who meet in the hospital, both giving birth to their first child. Each will take home a boy, but what they won’t realize for quite some time is that each mother was given the other’s son.

It’s Janis (Cruz) who begins to suspect the truth when the father (Israel Elejalde), a flirtatious archeologist with a wife and no real interest in a more permanent relationship with the photographer, sees no resemblance in the child to anyone in his family. A chance meeting with Ana (Smit) brings the characters back into each others orbit as Janis’ suspicions are realized and a gnawing guilt over the truth begins to color all that will follow.

Hawkeye – Ronin

  • Title: Hawkeye – Ronin

“Ronin” is notable for people telling Kate (Hailee Steinfeld) to stay away from Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). This includes her mother (Vera Farmiga), Clint himself, and Yelena (Florence Pugh) who shows up in Kate’s apartment for a little chat about her new best friend. Starting here, and continuing through the series finale, the scenes between Kate and Yelena prove to be some of the best of the series (although we don’t get nearly as much interaction between Yelena and Clint as I expected).

Stargirl – The Complete Second Season

  • Title: Stargirl – Season Two
  • wiki: link

The Second Season of Stargirl finds Courtney (Brec Bassinger) forced to attend summer school and deal with the arrival of Eclipso in Blue Valley. It will be a tumultuous season for the new JSA as Eclipso targets various members of the team forcing Yolanda (Yvette Monreal) to quit her role as Wildcat and Rick (Cameron Gellman) to end up in prison after loosing his temper.

The season offers a number of flashbacks to the original team, including (in the season’s stand-out episode) the big reveal of how the JSA were able to defeat Eclipso and the consequences from the encounter which was the beginning of the end for the group. We also see the fallout of season one on several characters and the struggle for Mike (Trae Romano) to find a role within the group.

Hawkeye – Partners, Am I Right?

  • Title: Hawkeye – Partners, Am I Right?

Although Clint (Jeremy Renner) will push her away again by the end of the episode, “Partners, Am I Right?” focuses mainly on the unexpected partnership between Hawkeye and Kate (Hailee Steinfeld). There are a lot of little pieces her involving looking into Kate’s crooked stepfather-to-be and his connection to the Tracksuit Mafia, the return of the LARPers, another run-in with Echo (Alaqua Cox), Kate guessing the truth of Ronin, and trap involving another item stolen from the Avengers which leads to the introduction of Yelena (Florence Pugh), which was teased at the end of Black Widow.
