Stargirl - Shiv (Part One) television review

The first half of Stargirl‘s first two-part episode offers a closer look at the life of mean girl Cindy Burman (Meg DeLacy), the daughter of the Dragon King (Nelson Lee). Revealed to be even more of a terror than the previous episodes had foreshadowed, “Shiv Part One” introduces us to the first super-villain of the younger generation. While different in a number of other ways, the episode exposes one common similarity between both Cindy and Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) in their impatience at being asked to slow down and wait by their father figures. An order both ignore, leading Stargirl to discover the hidden pathways within the school and have a run-in with a villain her own age for a change.

Once and Future #8

Once and Future #8 comic reviewOnce and Future #8 confirms both the identity of the old wizard we saw in the last issue steal the Beowulf manuscript as Merlin and explain why he has been working in the shadows to bring Bewoulf back into the world. Despite Bridgette’s assertion that Beowulf is nothing more than a poem, the now flesh-and-blood legendary warrior strolls both into Zombie Camelot and later finds his way onto the top of Duncan’s car (as Rose’s warning comes seconds too late).

Beowulf makes a powerful ally for Zombie Arthur and Merlin who trick the legendary hero and send him after Duncan and his Gran. I’ll be curious to see what direction the story takes. Will Duncan need to best the hero? Or merely make him see the truth?

Young Justice #15

Young Justice #15 comic reviewSince the beginning of the series characters of been bouncing around the Multiverse, but with Young Justice #15 Superboy and the rest of the expanded Young Justice cast are finally back together on Earth. After quickly wrapping up the lingering plot thread of Dr. Glory (who Conner isn’t above toying with before turning her over to the FBI), the comic moves to the larger issue of Conner’s place in the world by Bart explaining the idea of Crisis while Superboy was on Gemworld and how this Earth was reshaped in his absence.

For teenagers, many of them take quite new to the super-hero game, they take the news of universal reset by some force unknown fairly well. And Superboy appears happy just to be home, with plenty of feels to go around (although he realizes Bart knows more than he’s telling).

Scooby-Doo! - The Backstage Rage television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to Scooby Doo, Where Are You! for another mystery involving some meddling kids and their talking dog. Scooby (Don Messick) and Shaggy (Casey Kasem) stumble onto a mystery when a violin case full of money falls into their laps, only to disappear thanks to some misdirection involving a dog puppet that leads Mystery, Inc. to the Strand Theater (perhaps a reference to Sherlock Holmes?) in search of answers. The backdrop of an empty theater with false walls, tunnels, and hidden rooms offers an exciting setting for the mystery.

Danger Man - Find and Destroy television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back into the Cold War spycraft of Danger Man. Trouble finds John Drake (Patrick McGoohan), even on holiday. Narrowly escaping being sent to Korea before setting off on his first vacation in years, Drake makes it to Rio only to be dragged into a local matter involving a top-secret British submarine that has crashed on the coast. Sent in without back-up, Drake’s mission is simple: find and destroy. The situation is complicated when a local family alerts other interested parties to the sub’s location, leading Drake to improvise and buy just enough time to destroy the secret technology using unreliable explosives before it can fall into enemy hands. The episode is bookended in a pair of humorous scenes that show even a patriot like Drake knows how to play the game in order to get a well-deserved vacation (or lengthen his stay in Rio a little longer).
