Altered Carbon - Fallen Angel / In a Lonely Place TV review

The second and third episodes of Altered Carbon begin Takeshi Kovacs’ (Joel Kinnaman) investigation into the murder attempt on his employer Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy). His search for suspects will lead him to an ally of convience in a former soldier (Ato Essandoh) who blames the billionaire for the death of his daughter (Hayley Law). Helping out his new friend (after he broke into his home, threatened him, and beat him up… twice), will get Kovacs in more trouble by the end of the third episode. There’s also the dangling thread of the girl who fell from the sky which currently feels completely superflous, but Ortega’s (Martha Higareda) involvement in hiding the body is an obvious tip that is more going on her than meets the eye. And don’t miss the first appearance of the mysterious ghost walker who spied on Kovacs sleeping with Miriam Bancroft (Kristin Lehman) and seems to have a special interest in the show’s protagonist.

Star Wars: Thrawn #1

Star Wars: Thrawn #1 comic reviewThe first issue of the new six-issue Star Wars mini-series from Jody Houser and artist Luke Ross fills in some of the past of the Chiss warrior Mitth’raw’nuruodo, better known as Thrawn. While it feels like a bit too much story is shoved into a single over-sized issue, fans of the character should enjoy the peak into the history of Timothy Zahn‘s famous creation.

Thrawn #1 takes us from the Galactic Empire’s search in the Outer Rim for the legendary warriors known as Chiss, to their discovery of Thrawn, his first meeting with Emperor Palpatine, and his enrollment in the Imperial Academy where he bests other recruits while battling racism, jealousy, and hatred from those who would see him fail.

The Flash - Trial of the Trickster TV review

Our Throwback Tuesday post this week takes us to Central City and the original television version of The Flash. One thing I’ve always appreciated about The CW’s current Flash television show is that it hasn’t run from the Scarlet Speedster’s previous TV history. Where possible, The Flash has found ways to work in various characters and actors from the 90s series. The recent episode, “The Elongated Knight Rises” brought back Corinne Bohrer to reprise her role as the sidekick of the Trickster (Mark Hamill) in the 90s TV-show’s final episode. Aside from the obvious fun of the episode having Hammill in full crazy-villain mode, the episode is important for the character of Prank (a crazy female sidekick who the main villain doesn’t always appreciate) and her relationship with the Trickster which is obviously the template for the Joker/Harley Quinn relationship which would blossom to great heights in Batman: The Animated Series and beyond.

Along the way they will meet Yeshii the woodsman, the grown human son of a cow, and a cursed man now living out his existence as a snake. They also follow a magical ball of yarn for a bit.

The odd journey will eventually lead them to the ruins of the once great Kingdom of Dragons, the unhatched eggs the witch told Koshchei about… and their protector who isn’t so keen on visitors.
