Batman - It's Never Too Late

“It’s Never Too Late” isn’t what you would expect from a Batman cartoon. With this early episode Batman: The Animated Series let fans know that the new series would break the mold when it came to cartoon heroes. The mob war between upstart Rupert Thorne (John Vernon) and old-timer Arnold Stromwell (Eugene Roche) heats up with the abduction of Stromwell’s son. Thorne leads Stromwell into a set-up where the old mobster is apparently killed, but Batman (Kevin Conroy) shows up to save Stromwell’s life and attempts over the rest of the episode to save the mobster’s soul.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #1

Red Hood and the Outlaws #1Just like Red Hood and the Outlaws: Rebirth #1, Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 proves to be an entirely Red Hood-focused story. This actually turns out to work quite well and, not for the first time, I’m wondering if the character actually needs odd sidekicks to make his own series work.

Setting up Red Hood’s infiltration of Black Mask‘s rising criminal empire, including an introduction Red Hood-style, Jason will run into and old friend and make a new one before the end of the first issue. Jason is swimming in dangerous waters attempting to take down Black Mask from within, especially not knowing what exactly the would-be kingpin of Gotham has in store for the city.

The Freemaker Adventures - Showdown on Hoth

The search for the last remaining Kyber Saber Crystal turns into a race between the Freemakers and Naare (Grey Griffin) and her bounty hunter friends. Containing several nods to The Empire Strikes Back, “Showdown on Hoth” includes the Freemakers finding the abandoned Rebel base and running into a baby Wampa (whose angry mother will help secure the group’s escape). The episode also offers another appearance of Durpin (Richard Kind) by Plumestriker (Jeff Bennett) demoted to one of the most desolate locations in the Empire.

Daredevil #10

Daredevil #10Daredevil #10 kicks off a new arc with Daredevil‘s protege Blindspot being lured in to an unusual murder scene which contains a wall-sized painting done in blood. Someone is obviously playing with the two heroes, but why? And what’s the broader significance of the painting itself, purposefully left for Daredevil and Blindspot to find?

Along with setting up a new mystery for the vigilante to solve, the latest issue also shows us that everything is not so peachy with Matt Murdock’s day job. His sudden appointment to the District Attorney’s office has earned the ire of several co-workers who were passed over for promotion and still hold grudges against loosing to the former defense attorney in court. That plus loosing the flexibility to control his own schedule foreshadows trouble for Murdock.

Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps #2

Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps #2Hal Jordan‘s search for answers about the missing Green Lantern Corps leads him into contact with a pair of Yellow Lanterns. News that a Green Lantern has survived, and that that Lantern is his former pupil, doesn’t sit well with Sinestro. Despite his bravado, news that his arch-nemesis is still alive makes his absolute control of the universe suddenly appear not quite as secure.

Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps #2 also begins to showcase the remaining Green Lantern Corps members. Small in number, and unable to recruit new ring-slingers, the Green Lanterns have returned. Unsure of the status quo, John Stewart sends a lone Green Lantern to investigate: Guy Gardner.
