Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od #1

Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od #1Set in 1938 during WWII, the Japanese have captured a Chinese scientist who has made a breakthrough in zero-point technology. The U.S. Military sends a reluctant Atomic Robo to investigate, find Dr. Lu Huang, and discover if the rumors of the Japanese creating their own teleforce gun are true. Of course, the military might have ulterior motives in finding Dr. Huang.

In Shanghai, Robo will meet the Chinese resistance and encounter old friend Helen McAlister before being captured by the Chinese military led by a super-powered soldier in Manchukuo. Let’s just say Robo’s sense of whimsy doesn’t help him make friends.

Pete’s Dragon

  • Title: Pete’s Dragon
  • IMDb: link

Pete's Dragon1977’s Pete’s Dragon is a goofy live-action kid’s movie about an orphan who gets into trouble thanks to a clumsy invisible dragon named Elliot. Something around the lines of The Apple Dumpling Gang mashed up with Mary Poppins, it’s a movie I remember from my childhood, but not well. To be honest, the announcement of a remake didn’t really interest me. However, Disney’s entirely new take on the tale proves to be a far more memorable adventure.

As much, if not more, descended from King Kong, Mighty Joe Young, and The Jungle Book than the original film, Pete’s Dragon is a surprisingly engaging and moving story about a lost kid named Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his pet dragon Elliot who finds the youngster in the middle of the woods after a tragic accident leaves Pete alone in the world.

If we’re stuck in an age of remakes, reboots, and sequels, Pete’s Dragon is an example of how you can improve on the original by adding depth to what was originally little more than a kiddie film. Although the 3D didn’t impress me, as the movie looked too dark in spots, the story lit up the screen.

Titans #1

Titans #1Clad in a new costume, Titans #1 continues to focus on the return of Wally West. Working with his old teammates once again, Lilith attempts to see into Wally’s mind and find some trace of the person responsible for removing him from reality.

It appears DC isn’t going to introduce Dr. Manhattan any time soon. However, Titans #1 does reintroduce a classic Flash villain who seems genuinely ready to take responsibility for wiping Wally out of resistance. Is Abra Kadabra just Manhattan’s beard, or does the futuristic magician honestly believe he is responsible for shifting Wally out of existence (and all the other New 52 changes)?

Detective Comics #937

Detective Comics #937Detective Comics #937 answers some very important questions about how the army of Batmen were created and why. While Batwoman reluctantly leads her team against her own father, with a pit stop through the deep underground of Gotham which Red Robin has made good use of, Batman breaks out of his cell and does a little investigating as to just what the hell is going on.

The most important piece of information Detective Comics #937 offers is just how the Batmen were able to take down Batman (technically they didn’t, their tech did). This addresses my one big complaint with the arc so far as well as points out a glaring weakness for the soldiers who are relying not only on tech stolen from Batman but a sophisticated computer program based on his own fighting style (which, of course could be vulnerable to the right kind of attack).

After popping enough Adderall to overdose an elephant Elliot’s grip on reality isn’t initially improved given a hallucination of shadowy figures torturing him on one of the most unusual ways possible. However, beginning a more controlled regimen Elliot finds himself temporarily free… although there are some side effects.
