The most well-received movie of Steven Seagal‘s career, 1992’s Under Siege cast him in the role of a former Navy SEAL busted down to the rank of a cook now serving onboard the USS Missouri. While sailing to California to be decommissioned, during the ship captain’s (Patrick O’Neal) birthday, terrorists take control of the ship planning to hijack the ship’s missiles leaving the cook the only one standing in their way.

The Beekeeper fits right in among the litany of action flicks centered around a former highly-skilled killer living a normal life who is woken out of his slumber for revenge. From First Blood to John Wick, it’s a well-tread road. Jason Statham stars as Adam Clay, a retired elite assassin (known as a Beekeeper) living off the grid keeping bees on a farm owned by a kind old woman (Phylicia Rashad). However, when she’s targeted by a phishing scam that destroys her life, Clay comes out of retirement for revenge.

Director McG‘s nonsensical follow up to 2000’s Charlie’s Angels goes bigger and dumber leaning full into cheap gags and T&A at every turn while sticking Natalie (Cameron Diaz), Dylan (Drew Barrymore), and Alex (Lucy Liu) in a plot featuring highly-classified data two random people are just wearing out in public on their fingers, and, eventually, revealing the former Angel Madison Lee (Demi Moore), almost as an afterthought, to be the villain behind the plot.

Shelter is far from the first film to play on the basic concept of letting sleeping dogs lie, but it does offer slightly more dramatic work for Jason Statham compared to some of his throwaway action sequences. We’re introduced to Mason (Statham) living in isolation on a small island in Scotland with this only ties to the outside world being a local fisherman and his niece Jessie (Bodhi Rae Breathnach) whose attempts to engage the mysterious stranger are rebuffed every time she brings him supplies.

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, 2000’s big-screen adaption of the late 70s TV show gave us Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu as three talented agents workng for a man named Charlie (voiced by John Forsythe who reprised his role from the series). A massive box office hit, staying at number one for four weeks in a row, Charlie’s Angels took some flack from some critics for aspects of its plot and its cheesecake factor which director McG would lean into even more heavily in the film’s sequel.
