Supergirl - American Alien television review

There are quite a few takeaways from the Fourth Season premiere of Supergirl along with foreshadowing of where the series is headed. First, fans of Superman: The Animated Series should be happy with the introduction of Rhona Mitra as Mercy (who first appeared on the cartoon as Lex Luthor’s henchman). There was turmoil both inside the DEO and in the government, Kara (Melissa Benoist) made major strides at work taking on the mentorship of a cub reporter (Nicole Maines), and we also got a slight tease of the powerful Russian Supergirl who likely won’t make a major appearance for a few weeks. The bigger takeaway is that Supergirl isn’t shying away from political storlyines as the new alien citizens come under attack from other Americans (who are assisted in the anger and thirst for violence by Mercy and her brother) as the show will apparently take a hard look this year at a divided nation and a rise of bigotry and violence by those who view others as outsiders.

Supergirl - Make It Reign television review

Setting up next week’s season finale, “Make It Reign” features Selena (Anjali Jay) and her disciples on Earth working to restore their world killer. Despite the illusion of being destroyed, Reign (Odette Annable) still exists and is tied to Sam. As the Kryptonian witches (which, despite being immensely powerful, are as ridiculous as they sound) resurrect their creation, Sam’s health worsens. And with Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Mon-El (Chris Wood) stuck Argo, things are looking pretty bleak for Earth, especially after the Kryptonians raid the DEO to get their hands on the final ingredient needed to bring back Reign.

Supergirl - Not Kansas television review

The episode ends with a new Kryptonian threat as those behind Reign’s existence show up on Earth and restore her citadel. In between, he latest episode of Supergirl offers two main stories. The first of these centers around Kara (Melissa Benoist) deciding to return to Argo with Mon-El (Chris Wood) and spend some time with her mother (Erica Durance). The other centers around weapons designed for the DEO hitting the streets and into the hands of an unstable lawyer with plans to use them against his former company.

Supergirl - Dark Side of the Moon television review

Searching for substance that can separate Reign (Odette Annable) from Sam leads Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Mon-El (Chris Wood) to an asteroid that isn’t an asteroid at all. What they find is the Kryptonian city of Argo floating in space thanks to the use of the very same material they need to stop Reign. The season finally offers a payoff to the show recasting Kara’s mother as Supergirl encounters Alura Zor-El (Erica Durance) alive and well on Argo. Despite the citizens needing the precious material to stay safe in space, Alura and Kara argue decisively for a sample to save the Earth. Kara meeting the council also answers the question to just who is behind Reign’s creation, although only for the audience.

Supergirl - The Fanatical television review

With Reign (Odette Annable) locked away and Lena (Katie McGrath) working on a cure, Supergirl‘s (Melissa Benoist) attention is turned to the followers of Thomas Coville who have turned to Reign for their deliverance and have been using Kryptonian texts to secretly create a weapon capable of creating a new world killer. Protecting one member of the cult (Nesta Cooper) from the others puts Superman’s black friend James “Don’t Call Me Jimmy” Olsen‘s (Mehcad Brooks) secret identity in jeopardy which leads to one of the actor’s best scenes of the series while explaining the racism he has dealt with his entire life and why being Guardian means so much to him.
