Wayback Wednesday takes us back to 2002 to a film spoofing the blaxploitation movies of the 1970s. Eddie Griffin stars as a “Soul Train reject with a Robin Hood complex” and fashion three decades out of style whose actions earn the attention of The B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D., a secret organization fighting for the Afro-American Way, who enlists the vigilante’s help in proving The Man is behind the sudden change in behavior of presidential candidate turned fried chicken aficionado General Warren Boutwell (Billy Dee Williams).

King Richard offers a different type of sports biopic with the focus not on the athlete, coach, or team, but on the father of a pair of promising young tennis players. The fairly conventional film showcases the unconventional path to tennis stardom Richard Williams (Will Smith) led his daughters Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton) to while pissing off pretty much everyone in the tennis world.

Because of how early the film is set, ending on Venus’ professional debut (which doesn’t paint a flattering picture of her opponent Arantxa Sánchez Vicario played by Marcela Zacarias), and how little the Williams sisters played in junior tennis, the younger Serena draws the short straw here and we don’t get as much tennis as you may expect. What King Richard does offers is a character study of the often rigid Richard Williams and the environment that raised two tennis stars who would change the sport.

Two of Jane‘s (Simon Baker) Red John suspects, Reede Smith (Drew Powell) and Robert Kirkland (Kevin Corrigan), investigate Jane as a suspect in the torture and killing of a murderer he once buried alive to coerce a confession. One, however, already knows who is responsible. Jane finds the entire situation interesting since the misinformation he left out to be found by whoever was spying on the mentalist pointed to the man as one of seven fake Red John suspects. More of the same here as California Bureau of Investigation continues to put more criminals behind bars in the second season of The Mentalist. Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) makes astonishing deductions while infuriating everyone around, including Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and her team, while bending (if not breaking) the law.
