Batman & the Outsiders #10 comic reviewWith Bruce Wayne reaching out to resources in attempts to discover what Ra’s al Ghul‘s endgame might be, and how it is related to both Kaliber and a Markovian scientist, the team he put together is in shambles. Black Lightning is now working with Lady Shiva who believes she can trade on this relationship and get closer to her daughter by helping the grieving hero in his search for revenge.

Ten issues in, Batman & the Outsiders continues to play the long game and tease the reader with breadcrumbs. Issue #10 does nothing to buck that trend as Bryan Edward Hill is taking the idea of “slow-play” to the limit.

Batman #87

Batman #87 comic reviewFollowing up on the events of Batman #86, the latest issue deals with the GCPD taking Deathstroke and the other assassins into custody and locking them up in the new secure prison known as the Black Block. Batman #87 reveals Deathstroke and his team always wanted to get captured (which makes you wonder why they fought so hard against Batman and what they may have done had they actually won the fight). While not that big of a surprise, it does make you wonder about the mind behind these plans.

We see Catwoman continuing to help out, and a cameo by Lucius Fox, but the rest of the Bat-Family, Outsiders, Justice League, etc. is nowhere to be found as Batman continues to struggle following the death of Alfred.

Batman #86

Batman #86 comic reviewA new creative team takes over following the events of City of Bane. Batman has taken back Gotham City, but in his absence things have gotten worse. The Dark Knight Detective is also down a few allies given the death of Alfred no appearance from any of the other members of the Bat-Family here (other than Catwoman).

The main theme to this opening arc appears to be that Batman has become reckless without Alfred in place to pull him back from the edge. The comic features Deathstroke returning to Gotham with a gang of C-list villains in tow. Most aren’t worth mentioning, but I was happy to see the underutilized Cheshire get an appearance here.

Batman Beyond - Spellbound television review

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to the dystopian future of Gotham City. The aptly-named “Spellbound” introduces a new villain to the show in Spellbinder (Jon Cypher) who uses his knowledge of the human psyche and futuristic tech to trap victims in hallucinatory fantasies while tricking them into performing crimes for him. While the episode never really explains why the tech works on Terry (Will Friedle) through the suit, it does allow Terry to fight against the altered reality as Batman and the effect on villain’s other subjects is one of the best parts of the episode including a Raiders of the Lost Ark opening sequence. Along with a pretty good original villain in the mold of a character like Scarecrow, the episode is also notable for Terry’s first meeting (out of costume) with Commissioner Barbara Gordon (Stockard Channing).

Batman & the Outsiders #8

Batman & the Outsiders #8 comic reviewDespite a late betrayal by one of their own, the Outsiders successfully return to Gotham City with Sofia Ramos in Batman & the Outsiders #8. Opening with the betrayal of Kaliber, the latest issue of the series confirms the death of Alfred has been what has kept Batman from being in the field with the Outsiders over the comic’s first arc.

It also offers a look at the Batcave through new eyes as Sofia takes another step into the world of heroes and villains while providing a pair of nice moments between Sofia and Katana, and between Signal and Cassandra who offer each other support after the turmoil of recent events.
