Batman & the Outsiders #8

Batman & the Outsiders #8 comic reviewDespite a late betrayal by one of their own, the Outsiders successfully return to Gotham City with Sofia Ramos in Batman & the Outsiders #8. Opening with the betrayal of Kaliber, the latest issue of the series confirms the death of Alfred has been what has kept Batman from being in the field with the Outsiders over the comic’s first arc.

It also offers a look at the Batcave through new eyes as Sofia takes another step into the world of heroes and villains while providing a pair of nice moments between Sofia and Katana, and between Signal and Cassandra who offer each other support after the turmoil of recent events.

Event Leviathan #6

Event Leviathan #6 comic reviewThe six-issue mini-series concludes with confirmation that former Manhunter Mark Shaw is the man responsible for stealing Leviathan away from Talia al Ghul and putting it to work to take down the DC Universe’s various spy agencies. Batgirl also arrives in time to reveal Leviathan’s endgame: leverage and expose various secrets around the world to gain control and gain power (and do what Manhunters were designed to do and bring order).

While far from a flashy choice, Shaw works as the man behind the mask that even revealed leaves him something of a mystery (Superman doesn’t even recognize him). With Shaw and Leviathan still at large as the mini-series comes to an end, this offers a chance for further explore both the leader and the organization over the coming months in potentially several different DC titles.

Event Leviathan #5

Event Leviathan #5 comic reviewThe penultimate issue of the six-issue mini-series begins delivering some answers about Leviathan, although the identity of the person behind the mask is still yet to be revealed. Picking up from issue #4’s cliffhanger, Lois Lane gets some unhappy news from the secondary group of detectives who have a theory about what is happening. Event Leviathan #5 will likely be remembered for the death of a major Superman supporting character over the years in Sam Lane (who is revealed to be working with, or at least sympathetic to the cause of, Leviathan).

The rest of the issue continues the bickering between the heroes and Superman‘s interaction with the Leviathan leader inside a trap Spyral originally created to deal with an out-of-control Superboy (should the need ever arise).

Batman & the Outsiders #6

Batman & the Outsiders #6 comic reviewBatman & the Outsiders #6 ends the comic’s opening arc with more failure from the Outsiders, and more absence from Batman. The comic picks up the thread of Ishmael and Cassandra Cain and Signal who appear to have been Ra’s al Ghul‘s targets all along. Lured into a trap by Ishmael, the pair discover Lady Shiva waiting for them with a surprise. Although Cassandra survives her mother-daughter reunion, Signal’s fate is left up in the air (although Ra’s does allude to his plans for the boy, and the rest of Batman’s soldiers, as he has chosen a new tactic in his war against the detective).

Batman: The Brave and the Bold - The Color of Revenge! TV review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to Gotham City where a masked detective and an assortment of partners would help save the world on a weekly basis. The episode opens with a flashback to Batman (Diedrich Bader) and Robin (Crawford Wilson) taking down Crazy Quilt (Jeffrey Tambor), who is blinded by the Boy Wonder. Fast-forwarding a few years, “The Color of Revenge!” reunites the Dynamic Duo after Robin has left Gotham City and struck out on his own in Blüdhaven. Batman arrives in town with news of Crazy Quilt’s escape and, to Robin’s chagrin, immediately tries to take control of the case. Although he comes off a bit whiny at times here, the episode Robin feeling overshadowed with Batman’s take-charge attitude and his tendency to still treat his former sidekick like, well, a sidekick.
