Batman #28 comic reviewBatman‘s recounting of the War of Riddles and Jokes” continues (as does the return of his narration in a conversation with Catwoman). Things haven’t improved for the good citizens of Gotham. The Joker and the Riddler have each carved half of the city for themselves, enlisting countless villains to their side in a war that rages on. From what we see there the sides appear fairly equal with Deadshot and Deathstroke getting prominent cameos.

The situation is too far out of hand for the GCPD to step in, and Batman is left trying to put out small fires rather than risk even more civilians getting caught in the crossfire.

Harley Quinn and Batman #1

Harley Quinn and Batman #1 comic reviewA prequel of sorts to DC’s new animated straight-to-DVD release Batman And Harley Quinn, the new digital series from artists and writers tied to Batman: The Animated Series begins here with the opening story by Ty Templeton and artist Rick Burchett focused on Harley Quinn‘s betrayal of the Joker.

Set in the style of last season of Batman: The Animated Series (I would have preferred the original look of the characters, but this version does offer us a cameo by Nightwing), the comic opens with Batman and Nightwing breaking into the Joker’s lair. Ready for the Dynamic Duo, the Joker is flabbergasting when all his defenses and plans fail spectacularly leading Harley to reveal that she was responsible. Not getting the rise out of Mr. J. she hoped, Harley does get a hand by Poison Ivy who shows up to rescue her friend from Batman and the police.

Batman #26 comic review“The War of Riddles and Jokes” continues, although without the flashback narration from Batman. This time the central character is not Batman, nor the Joker, nor the Riddler, but an inventor and mechanic of sorts who gets trapped in the games between the other three parties. The ridiculously-named Charles Brown is used as a pawn by the Dark Knight Detective and the Riddler both to draw out the Joker. The plan blows up in everyone’s faces, and costs the low-rent thug what he prizes above all else.

Batman #27 works as a pretty compelling origin story for one of Batman’s D-List villains. Charlie Brown’s love of his son, understanding of wind-dynamics, and adoption of the seemingly innocuous toy used to take his son away from him certainly gives unexpected weight to the origin of someone choosing to call himself Kite Man.

Ciarán Hinds, Amber Heard, Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, and J.K. Simmons also star. The movie opens in theaters on November 17, 2017.

Detective Comics #960 comic reviewDetective Comics #960 continues the arc’s dual storylines. Batman reconnects with Zatanna and attempts to convince her to let him use a powerful and dangerous artifact known as the Gnosis Sphere which can answer any question posed to it. Once again we’re give flashbacks to Bruce and Zatanna’s past and the first time Zatanna offered to show her young friend the device. Now she does all she can to dissuade him from using it.

Given the recent events involving the apparent loss of Tim Drake and Batman discovering that his memories have been altered where the League of Shadows (and possibly other things) are concerned, along with his quest to find the answers about the mysterious god-like force altering the DCU, it makes sense that Batman would seek out confirmation about his decision-making and to find out answers to his questions. However, as Zatanna says, that’s a dangerous path to go down.
