Batman

Detective Comics #959

Detective Comics #959 comic reviewOn one hand Detective Comics #959 is a middle issue of an Azrael arc. I’ll be honest, that’s not going to grab my attention or keep it, by itself, for that long. It appears the Order of St. Dumas, who programmed Azrael and sent him out in the world as their agent of change and vengeance, got tired of him choosing his own path and put together something even more fearsome in their new acolyte Ascalon. While the latest issue doesn’t offer much more information about the new threat, it does foreshadow a possible issue with Azrael looming in the very near future.

Batman: The Animated Series - If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich? television review

For Throwback Thursday we look back at one of my favorite episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. While the Joker was appeared in more than two-dozen episodes (and a couple of movies), another of Batman’s most notable adversaries was give far-less screentime. “If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Rich?” offers us the origins of the Riddler (John Glover). After software designer Edward Nygma is screwed out of his proceeds from the best-selling video game he created, the man disappears only to pop-up later as a super-villain taking advantage of the game’s popularity to attack Daniel Mockridge (Gary Frank) using both riddles and the theme park created from the game as a weapon against his former boss.

Batman #25

Batman #25 comic reviewBatman #25 offers very little of the Batman, and only one unspoken cameo for his new bride-to-be. Instead the issue sets up events for the comic’s next big arc. While the Joker passes time shooting comedians who fail to make him laugh, the Riddler finds a way to bring his incarceration to an end by threatening the lives of the prison guards’ children. With two of Batman’s most notorious enemies at large it doesn’t take long for the pair to cross paths. When the Riddler’s suggestion of a team-up for the pair is rebuffed by the noisy end of a gun it proves to be the first shot fired in “The War of Jokes and Riddles.”

Detective Comics #958

Detective Comics #958 comic reviewDetective Comics #958 begins a new arc for the comic which will dive into a bit of Azrael‘s past while also bringing back a familiar face for DC fans (more on that later). While Bruce Wayne goes out of his way, even ingratiate himself to the Penguin, to get in position to attend a very private show, most of the comic centers around Azrael whose old friend shows up injured and with a warning. Tired of waiting for their avenging angel to take his rightful place, the Order of St. Dumas now has a new champion who it has let loose in Gotham to find their wayward warrior.

Azrael is a complicated character. Never intended to become Batman (even a brutal bat-shit crazy version) it’s been something of a struggle for DC to know what to do with him following the events of Knightfall. As with many characters, Rebirth has given Azrael new life put to good use as part of this ensemble. The comic uses just enough of his origins here to work.

Batman #24

Batman #24 comic reviewBatman #24 teases a major change for Batman. There’s little to no action here as the comic focuses on two separate conversations. The first involves Batman discussing the future with Gotham Girl, where she might go from here, and his own reasons for crime-fighting. This conversation leads into the other part of the story with Batman seeking out Catwoman and making a very unexpected proposal.

Over the years both Bruce Wayne and Batman have had several different love interests. Every Bat-fan has their favorite, but each is flawed in some way. Talia al Ghul is the daughter of one of Batman’s most fearsome enemies. Vicky Vale is a reporter. And Catwoman is, despite the stretches during which she’s attempted to go straight, a criminal.
