The Fortification Implementation

“The Fortification Implementation” is a rare episode of The Big Bang Theory where we are offered three separate stories which all work independently of each other. My favorite of the three brings back Wil Wheaton playing himself, and Penny‘s (Kaley Cuoco) former co-star on Serial Ape-ist 2: Monkey See, Monkey Kill, for a podcast in Penny’s apartment with Penny and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and special guest-caller Kevin Smith (also playing himself and never shown on-screen). Bringing up the old fights about Penny’s failed acting career the scenes also feature some fun back-and-fourth between the four characters with several jokes at Kevin Smith’s expense (who’s not even in the room to defend himself).

The Interview

The InterviewThe Interview is known mostly for North Korean pressure stopping its wide release in theaters. The controversy that followed brought attention to a throwaway cheap-laugh comedy that would have otherwise been quickly forgotten. The script by Dan Sterling is part Spies Like Us and part Saturday Night Live skit as the star (James Franco) and producer (Seth Rogen) of a talk show get an inclusive interview with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (Randall Park). The pair are quickly approached by the CIA who attempt to use the opportunity to kill Kim by turning a pair of complete morons into assassins without proper training or back-up.

Franco and Rogen are funny guys but they’re just going through the motions of various gags (including a surprisingly bloody action sequence). In someone else’s hands the premise might have led to a subversive satire but its clear Rogen and company only care about stuffing the film with as many cheap laughs as possible with the Franco-Rogen bromance in full swing complete with several dick jokes and multiple discussions of hiding spy gear up Rogen’s ass.

The Colonization Application

The joy of Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) deciding to share a pet turtle is lessened when Dr. Cooper casually mentions he’s applied for the upcoming Mars mission without first informing his girlfriend. The episode includes Sheldon’s Mars video audition and a rather sweet make-up moment between Cooper and his girlfriend. Meanwhile, in an attempt to jump start their sex life, Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) do a little full-body naked sex painting that doesn’t turn out as planned.

The Big Bang Theory - The Anxiety Optimization

Three stories are at play in “The Anxiety Optimization.” Stuck at the airport with Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), Howard (Simon Helberg) freaks out after realizing the airline has lost his suitcase containing his mother’s ashes. To disprove a psychological study suggesting it can make two people fall in love Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) spend the evening together answering a list of personal questions. With their friends busy Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Amy (Mayim Bialik), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), and Emily (Laura Spencer) spend the night at a puzzle room where the scientists pay big bucks for the opportunity to think their way out of a lab with a zombie (which proves far easier than they expected).
