Community - Ladders

The first episode of the show’s Sixth Season introduces Paget Brewster as Francesca “Frankie” Dart, a consultant brought in to join the Save Greendale Committee following the latest Greendale fiasco when the cafeteria roof collapses under the weight of one too many Frisbees. Starting out its first online season without half the original cast leaves the show feeling early on like a shadow of its former self but a ludicruous underground speakeasy later and its clear that the show is in good hands with Dan Harmon back behind the helm.

Still Slightly Out of Tune

  • Title: Pitch Perfect 2

Pitch Perfect 2Based on the book by Mickey Rapkin 2012’s Pitch Perfect was an occasionally fun, if wildly inconsistent, story glorifying a bizarre college subculture where a capella groups were the biggest celebrities on a college campus. Picking up three years later, loner Freshman Becca (Anna Kendrick) has grown into the Senior leader of the three-time defending a capella champions who face new adversity when a complicated stunt goes wrong at a public event.

Barred from competing, touring, or defending their national championship by the announcers (John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks) who cover the sport (and also run it now?), the Barden Bellas’ only chance for redemption is to become the first American group to win at the World A capella Tournament.

If you thought it was bizarre seeing colleges go wild over a capella singing in the first film you haven’t seen anything yet as, in typical sequel fashion, Pitch Perfect 2 goes bigger this time around. The results are much the same as the first film with awkward romantic subplots and an odd storyline designed to make Becca the outsider of the group once more as she is the only member of the Bellas planning for life after college.

The Big Bang Theory - The Commitment Determination

Relationship change is at the center of every storyline in the show’s Eighth Season finale that teases big changes for every single character but (mostly) fails to follow through. After some nagging by Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) begin discussing a wedding date and eventually agree to a spontaneous wedding in Vegas, although a late reveal from Leonard spoils the mood and leaves the couple in a nebulous state still on their way to Vegas but without the finale delivering the long-promised ceremony.

The Communication Deterioration

While Penny (Kaley Cuoco) balances the possibility of renewing her acting career and weighing it against her new successful job Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) work together on a NASA project which they decide both Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Howard (Simon Helberg) are too controlling to be a part of. The final nail in the coffin of Penny’s acting career is satisfying allowing her to realize the toxicity of her former profession and compare it to her current job. Given the tease of a possible role in an upcoming movie I half-expected the show to steer her back to a potential career-making role but I’m glad to see the show has continued to take a more realistic view towards her acting career.
