Splitsville

While a little uneven in spots, Splitsville made me laugh harder in the theater than I have in quite some time. The farcical romantic comedy centers around Carey (Kyle Marvin) who, after the unexpected break-up with his wife Ashley (Adria Arjona), literally runs away to take up refuge with his best friend Paul (Michael Angelo Covino who also co-wrote the screenplay and directs) and Julie (Dakota Johnson). Learning the pair have an open relationship causes Carey to reevaluate his life, and his choice to sleep with Julie creates consequences for all involved.

Re-released in theaters for the film’s 40th anniversary, Clue (based off the board game of the same name) wasn’t a big hit on its release but found its audience soon after on home video and cable where it quickly became a cult craze. Released in theaters in three separate versions, each containing a different ending to the whodunit, the film follows a group of strangers brought together in an old mansion to solve the murder of their blackmailer that night which one (or more) of them have committed.

The Pickup

I love of a good heist movie. The Pickup is not a good heist movie. It’s generous to call The Pickup a film at all. The braindead comedy features Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson as armored car guards who get targeted in convoluted scheme by a beautiful young woman (Keke Palmer) with a sob story and a pair of goons (Jack Kesy and Ismael Cruz Cordova). There’s almost nothing believable about the script by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider and less likable about the movie.

The sequel to the Chinese animated film Ne Zha (which was based, partly on Chinese mythology), Ne Zha 2 continues the story of Ne Zha and Ao Bing who are forced to share Ne Zha’s body (leading to All of Me style comedic bits throughout the film). To help put things right, and to save Chentang Pass from invasion, Ne Zha agrees to undertake three quests to become an immortal which would allow him to restore the Sacred Lotus and create a new body for Ao Bing. However, as Ne Zha soon learns, being an immortal isn’t all its cracked up to be.

Good Cop / Bad Cop – The King’s Assassin

Lou (Leighton Meester) and Henry (Luke Cook) investigate a trio of cyrpto bros after one of the dies of poisoning leaving the rest of the department to focus on Big Hank’s (Clancy Brown) charity fundraiser and the money that disappear during a sudden blackout. There isn’t much to either case, although there is some fun to be had watching Joe (Scott Lee) struggling to figure out who stole the money only to donate it to charity anonymously (which of course was Lou, attempting to teach her father a lesson) and given one of the suspects in the poisoning reminds Henry of his ex it does offer a bit more of a glimpse into his past.
