Darkwing Duck - Night of the Living Spud television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to crime-ridden streets of St. Canard and a hero who flaps in the night. “Night of the Living Spud” offers the return of Bushroot (Tino Insana) whose attempts to grow a girlfriend go wrong (in a fun homage to Young Frankenstein as Bushroot’s assistant accidentally breaks the crucial ingredient and substitutes whatever else he can find). The result is a vampire potato that turns its victims, including the Muddlefoots and Launchpad (Terence McGovern), into potato-hungry zombies (and literally couch potatoes). The episode is framed by Darkwing Duck (Jim Cummings) telling the story to a group of scouts not all that helpful in getting our hero out of the woods and features Darkwing’s troubles with the country locals who initially mistake our hero for the vampire (a misunderstanding he’ll turn to his advantage as the episode comes to a close).

Throwback Thursday takes us back to crime-ridden streets of St. Canard and a hero who flaps in the night. Framed as through the lens of Darkwing Duck (Jim Cummings) digging into his old case files, “Beauty and the Beet” offers the origins of Bushroot (Tino Insana) from scientist to a half-plant hybrid. Fired from St. Canard University, Dr. Bushroot attempts to prove the worth of his research concerning human photosynthesis by experimenting on himself (which turns out to have unexpected consequences).

Darkwing Duck - Darkly Dawns the Duck television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to crime-ridden streets of St. Canard and a hero who flaps in the night. Darkwing Duck‘s two-part opener “Darkly Dawns the Duck” introduces us to the little-known hero of St. Canard, Darkwing Duck (Jim Cummings) whose first big case sets him against the even machinations of Taurus Bulba (Tim Curry), a devilishly-clever criminal mastermind who is still operating his gang from inside prison. Bulba has his sights on a device that disrupts gravitational bonds and allows manipulation on a micro scale along with the inventor’s granddaughter Gosalyn (Christine Cavanaugh), and orphan who is the only living soul who knows the code to turn it on. Darkwing’s attempt to prevent the robbery actually makes him the #1 suspect in the crime (leading police to chase after the hero for most of the two-part episode).

DuckTales - The Duck Knight Returns! television review

Reintroduced as a the title character of Launchpad‘s (Beck Bennett) favorite show, “The Duck Knight Returns!” features Jim Cummings reprising his role, this time as the actor Jim Starling who played the character Darkwing Duck on television. Relegated to small-time promotional efforts, Starling is at first ecstatic to learn of a new Darkwing Duck movie… at least until learning that he is not part of the project from director Alistair Boorswan (Edgar Wright). Teamed-up with his favorite hero, Launchpad will try and help Darkwing break into the studio and set things right… until he discovers that the new actor Drake Mallard (Chris Diamantopoulos) far more epitomizes the ideals of the Darkwing Duck than the bitter and selfish Starling.
