darkwing-duck-cover-7The series-ending “Dark Currency” crossover arc which began last week in DuckTales #5 continues here as Darkwing, Launchpad, Scrooge McDuck and the kids crash into Quackwerks (literally) and begin their search for Gizmoduck.

As you would expect for a crossover event made to send both titles out on top this one is filled to the brim with appearances by Darkwing’s rogues gallery (Megavolt, Bushroot, Quackerjack, The Liquidator, Ammonia Pine) all suped-up on the dark magic from Magica and the Phantom Blot (and you really don’t want to know its effect on the good guys!).

The writing and art is a little more consistent than in last week’s issue (as it falls squarely on the shoulders of the comic’s regular team of Ian Brill and James Silvani this time around) and it certainly doesn’t skimp on action. One of may favorite panels includes Darkwing and pals looking up at the oncoming storm of some of his powerful villains descending on them. If the point of this crossover was to send both comics out with a big event it’s succeeding.

ducktales-5-coverThe last four issues of Darkwing Duck‘s adventures in Boom Studio’s comics begin here with part one of the four-part crossover between Darkwing Duck and DuckTales. Realizing something is amiss in St. Canard, Scrooge McDuck and his three nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, travel to find out what fate has befallen Scrooge’s former accountant Fenton Crackshell (the one-time super-hero known as Gizmoduck).

Locating Crackshell proves to be easy, dealing with a city gone mad thanks to the Legion of Eve-il is going to be far more tricky. Magica, the Phantom Blot, and Ammonia Pine have banded together and are magically altering the city into a the stuff of nightmares. Never fear, for Darkwing Duck is on the case!

The story is co-written by Warren Spector and Ian Brill and the art is also divided between Jose Massaroli and James Silvani. For having that many cooks in the kitchen it turns out quite well. I’d rather have a solo Darkwing adventure, but seeing as his days are numbered I’ll take all that I can get. Worth a look.

Darkwing Duck #16

darkwing-duck-16-coverThe title may be winding down to its final issue but that’s not stopping the team of writer Ian Brill and artist James Silvani from delivering great stories month after month.

The lastest issue wraps up the St. Canard mayoral race between Darkwing Duck and Launchpad McQuack as well as reveals the identity of the latest villain to hit town: Suff-Rage. (Yeah, that’s right the female villain in an electoral story arc is named suffrage). How are more people not reading this title?

The aftermath of the election is quite humorous, as are the two front page news stories relating the landslide victory and what happens to the city five-minutes after he takes office.

The final pages of the issue also introduce our villains for the series final two issues: Magica and The Phantom Blot (based on the classic Disney character and enemy to Mickey Mouse). The new story arc will continue in a crossover in the next issue of Duck Tales (also ending in a couple of months) before returning next month for the series’ penultimate issue. Best of the week.

Darkwing Duck #15

darkwing-duck-15-coverWhat can I say? Darkwing Duck can even make politics fun! The battle for Mayor of St. Canard heats up as both Darkwing Duck and Launchpad McQuack stave off negative campaigning (who they blame each other for, although neither is responsible). As the comic nears its final issue this one is jampacked with cameos including Launchpad’s new campaign manager, Spike, and Darkwing and Launchpad putting aside their issues to battle The League of Barely Remembered Supervillains!

The League is made up entirely of lesser known criminals from the Darkwing Duck cartoon including Lilliput, Professor Moliarty, the Bugmaster, Jambalaya Jake (and his pet gator Gumbo), and Tuskernini. Victory of the also-rans is shortlived as Suff-Rage pulls out all the stops by mysmerizing the audience to attack all three candidates.

Once again writer Ian Brill and artist James Silvani outdo themselves in creating an insanely fun read (with extra insanity). If you aren’t reading Darkwing Duck you’re missing out. Worth a look.

Darkwing Duck #14Just as Darkwing Duck‘s mayoral campaign begins in earnest he’s attacked from two sides. The first is by his opponent in the race, current City Councilwoman A. Dention, who wonders live on air if the blame for all the trouble in St. Canard shouldn’t fall at the feet of the city’s self-appointed savior. As he’s out saving the city from another disaster Darkwing can’t fight back against Dention, but he can fight against his other threat – a giant armored battle suit at the hands of one pissed off kitten who calls himself Cat-Tankerous. (Which, seriously, is all kinds of awesome!)
