Most people remember Piper Perabo for her starring role in 2000’s Coyote Ugly, but my crush on her started with the first movie I saw her in where she played newbie FBI Agent Karen Sympathy. Covert Affairs is a return to form (of sorts) as Perabo stars as a young woman in her first days as an agent for the CIA.
The First Season follows Annie Walker (Perabo) going to work for the Domestic Protection Division of the CIA under the command of Joan Campbell (Kari Matchett), the wife of the Director of the National Clandestine Service (Peter Gallagher). Throughout the first season Annie will learn much about trust, spycraft, and the new shade of gray her life has become as she lies to her sister (Anne Dudek) about what her new job entails. She will also begin to unravel the mystery of a short-term love affair (Eion Bailey) from her past which has much more to do with the CIA than she could have possibly imagined.

Season One of Covert Affairs is done. The season finale “When the Levee Breaks” tied-up a few loose ends, including the Anne/Ben relationship (hopefully for good). I liked this first season, especially the episodes that didn’t get hijacked by Anne’s lost love, and am happy it got renewed for a second season beginning next summer. First days on the job can be hard, especially if you’re a spy. In Covert Affairs Piper Perabo stars as FBI Agent Karen Sympathy…wait, that was something else. Perabo stars as CIA trainee Annie Walker who gets thrown into the field for a special assignment. Christopher Gorham and Anne Dudek also star. Although the Pilot is a little rough in spots, I could do without the jealousy of Annie’s boss (Kari Matchett) to her husband (Peter Gallagher), and I’m still very much on the fence of the mysterious love angle, there’s definite promise. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) returns for a third entry picking up right where The Bourne Supremacy ended. Bourne gets himself out of Russia and goes after those responsible for Treadstone looking for answers and revenge for Marie’s (Franka Potente) death. The film is filled with amazing stunts, and yet another great car chase, this time through the streets of New York City. For more on the plot and review of the film check out my original review.
I liked, but was slightly disappointed with, The Bourne Ultimatum as I feel it was a small step backward from the second film. Still, it’s a fun ride and with the extras offered here it’s an easy recommendation to make and a nice addition to anyone’s collection. Also worth noting, if you don’t already have the first two films in the series, Universal is putting out “The Jason Bourne Collection” – a four-disc set filled with all the extras, complete with a Jason Bourne passport, and housed in a safety deposit box tin.
