Highlander - The Hunters television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to a man born in the Highlands of Scotland more than 400 years ago and a murderous game between sword-wielding immortals where there can be only one. The final episode of Highlander‘s First Season offers a turning point for the show. Although they won’t be named or begin having their mythology explored until the next season’s premiere, “The Hunters” introduces the Watchers (humans who have watched and chronicled the exploits of immortals for generations). The ones introduced here are far less passive than the rest of the organization as they hunt down and kill immortals hoping to prevent a winner of the Gathering from garnering enough power to rule mankind. Darius (Werner Stocker, who only appears in flashbacks and existing footage as he was too ill make a final appearance on the show) becomes their latest victim, as the show says farewell to one of its longest recurring characters but also introduces a new one in Hugh Fitzcairn (Roger Daltrey), an old friend of MacLeod‘s (Adrian Paul) who helps look into the group hunting them (and later needs Duncan to rescue him).

The Invincible Red Sonja #2

The Invincible Red Sonja #2 comic reviewRed Sonja‘s return to Erkhara as the protector of Princess Zaria doesn’t begin easily. Not only does she have to protect the princess against attack, but Sonja’s return hasn’t gone unnoticed by the kingdom’s wizard who has put a bounty on Sonja’s head as well. On the eve of the wedding, we also get an attack on Zaria’s life and the theft of the crown jewels of the city. It doesn’t appear things will get any easier for Sonja in the days to come.

Most of the action from this second issue comes from Sonja running down an assassin across the city. We also get a battle with an unknown creature in a dark pit, which is cleverly hidden from the viewer as the creature from the shadows finishes off the would-be assassin.

The Invincible Red Sonja #1

The Invincible Red Sonja #1 comic reviewA new adventure begins for Red Sonja starting aboard a plundering pirate ship whose victims include a princess on her way to a royal wedding. Although Sonja saves the princess from the pirates, the young woman escapes into the sea which turns out to be a better fate than the pirates who run into sirens and all die a horrible death. Still, it offers more enemies for Sonja to slay.

Fate brings the half-drowned Sonja and Princess Zaria together again, this time with the princess offering Sonja a job to protect her until the culmination of her wedding to unite two kingdoms. Sonja accepts, but from the prelude tease that opens the issue it sounds like this job may be far more difficult than she believes.

Highlander - Eye of the Beholder television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to a man born in the Highlands of Scotland more than 400 years ago and a murderous game between sword-wielding immortals where there can be only one. Richie (Stan Kirsch) comes between MacLeod (Adrian Paul) and an old friend, womanizer, and thief Gabriel Piton (Nigel Terry) who murdered his lover (Rachel Palmieri) to keep his secrets and has now set his gaze on Richie’s new friend Maya (fashion model Katia Douvalian). Mac’s friendship with Gabriel offers a look at his more carefree days, and also the lengths he will go to for a friend (even one who has betrayed him). Gabriel plays Richie, landing him in prison and forcing MacLeod to do battle with an old friend for the life of a new one. Douvalian, a model rather than actress struggles at times with her lines, but certainly looks good on screen while Gabriel makes for an interesting frenemy who is destroyed by putting his desires and greed above friendship for a second time.

Mortal Kombat movie review

The 2021 adaptation of the Mortal Kombat video games has a higher budget, better special effects, and a cast at least as talented as the 1995 film. So why is it less entertaining? It probably has something to with the flaws of the earlier film feeding into joys of a B-movie, while the more serious approach this time around is just flawed. Oh, and if you are going to do a Mortal Kombat movie, you may want to include a Mortal Kombat tournament in it.

The entire film takes place prior to a tournament and involves the minions of Shang Tsung (Chin Han) being sent to kill the warriors of Earth despite the fact that all evidence suggests Earth has no chance in winning the tournament. However, there’s a prophecy that a descendant of Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada), who we see murdered in the opening scene, will prevent Outworld from winning Mortal Kombat.

Our heroes are former MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan) who turns out to be a poor substitute for Liu Kang as the hero of destiny, and Special Forces officers Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee).
