Red Sonja #1

Red Sonja #1 comic reviewRed Sonja #1 kicks off a new story as Red Sonja is hired to find Sitha, a missing child from a powerful religious caste kidnapped and now in a migrant village which has been pillaged by the Three-Eyed Shezem and is still burning by the time Sonja arrives on the scene. Angered by arriving so late, Sonja is shocked to find the girl miraculously still alive. Feverish and confused, Sitha takes Sonja to be her mother and so their journey together begins.

Most of the action comes late in the comic when the Three-Eyed Shezem catch up with Sonja and the girl only to get the pointy-end of Sonja’s blade and the unbridled fury of the girl’s hidden power. There’s obviously more to Sitha than just a confused young girl.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

  • Title: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
  • IMDb: link

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie reviewWith Marvel rebuilding its Cinematic Universe following Avengers: Endgame, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings proves to be an unexpected delight (especially for a studio who steadfastly refused to create a female-driven movie for a decade). We’re given an Asian cast and director (Destin Daniel Cretton), and a focus in a new direction. Based on the lesser-known character Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings isn’t an origin story nor does it feel forcibly tied down to the rest of the MCU in any way. Instead, the film feels like a breath of fresh air where anything is possible.

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #2

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #2 comic reviewThe black, white, and red anthology series continues with three more tales of Red Sonja from different writers and artists. “Proelium Finalis” features Queen Sonja defending her kingdom against a legion of Lemurians led by Al-Ammon while suggesting the possibility that it might be the warrior’s last battle.

The most comical (and by far the least bloody) of the three tales, “Edible” leads Sonja in search of a missing young girl inside a mysterious bog that wants to devour them both. It’s by her wits, rather than her sword arm, that Red Sonja survives.

The Invincible Red Sonja #3

The Invincible Red Sonja #3 comic reviewThe theft of the royal crown, which threatens the upcoming wedding of Princess Zaria, alters Red Sonja‘s mission in Erkhara. Rather than remain by the side of the princess, Sonja sets off in search of the thief known to be able to fence such an item. Coincidentally, the thief Bahira Yakootah is also the one who has put a price on Sonja’s head.

Most of the action from The Invincible Red Sonja #3 comes from the bar brawl where Sonja litters the floor with thieves and cutthroats while searching for the whereabouts of Bahira Yakootah. Tuma arrives late to offers some assistance, but even without his help Sonja cuts a bloody swath through the adversaries.

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #1

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #1 comic reviewRed Sonja steals a page from Batman with a series of short tales in black and white (with a splash of red thrown in) from different writers and artists. Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #1 offers three tales featuring the She-Devil with a Sword.

“The Sorcerer of Shangara!” opens with Red Sonja in a dungeon full of bewitched prisoners all too happy to remain and confused by Sonja’s attempts to escape. In “The Hunted” Sonja comes across an amorous couple in the woods which she befriends and/or uses as bait (depending on your point of view) while taking out a group of warriors on her tail. And in “Seeing Red” Sonja takes a job to retrieve a ruby from tomb not realizing it is protected by an invisible beast who she needs to make bleed to get a good look at.
