Highlander - The Lady and the Tiger television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to a man born in the Highlands of Scotland more than 400 years ago and a murderous game between sword-wielding immortals where there can be only one. “The Lady and the Tiger” introduces us to one of Highlander‘s best recurring characters, and the only one to get her own spin-off. A trip to the circus reunites MacLeod (Adrian Paul) with Amanda (Elizabeth Gracen), a thief and former lover who has left Duncan holding the bag several times over the centuries (an example of which we see in the flashbacks). The episode never explains the coincidence of the pair’s reunion as Amanda seems as surprised to see Duncan in the big top as he is to see her on the high wire. The episode also introduces Amanda’s former partner Zachary Blaine (Jason Isaacs) who escapes a prison transport in the opening scene with plans on killing Amanda, at least until she offers to help him take MacLeod’s head instead.

Highlander - For Tomorrow We Die television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to a man born in the Highlands of Scotland more than 400 years ago and a murderous game between sword-wielding immortals where there can be only one. The first Highlander set up basic rules for immortals to follow along with a sort of honor code that even the most vile obeyed. With “For Tomorrow We Die” the series introduces a character who will stretch those boundaries in Xavier St. Cloud (Roland Gift). Interested only in money, and willing to kill anyone who gets in his way, Xavier’s favorite weapon of choice is poison gas which he uses to rob a jewelry store in the episode’s opening scene. The paths of MacLeod (Adrian Paul) and Xavier have crossed before when the immortal gassed an entire regiment during World War I in order to steal the money the soldiers were to be paid (he also wasn’t above attempting to take MacLeod’s head while he was still recovering from the toxin).

Highlander - Band of Brothers television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to a man born in the Highlands of Scotland more than 400 years ago and a murderous game between sword-wielding immortals where there can be only one. Aside from being a strong standalone episode, “Band of Brothers” feeds the larger Highlander storylines in several ways. First, the episode introduces the former general turned priest in Darius (Werner Stocker). A mentor and friend to Duncan (Adrian Paul), Darius’ introduction not only fills in a gap of Duncan’s life from warrior to a more complex individual but also introduces the idea of a Dark Quickening which the series will develop further along the line by offering the story of the inverse when the once powerful general was forever changed by taking the life of a holy man and turning away from a life of war.

Red Sonja #14

Red Sonja #14 comic reviewRed Sonja‘s victory over the conqueror Dragan The Magnificent didn’t come without a cost. Hyrkania is in ruins, it’s people starving, and Sonja is forced to look to an old enemy for help. Leaving the remains of her kingdom in the hands of her trusted adviser, Sonja travels to Khitai to bargain with King Jo’Khan who killed her mentor on his rise to power.

While much of the current volume has focused on Red Sonja in struggle, Red Sonja #14 features the heroine at the mercy of an enemy (in his ornate, and functional, throne room designed to keep enemies at a distance) who agrees to help feed Sonja’s people in exchange for the She Devil with a Sword training and leading his armies against all who might oppose him.

Onward, But Not Necessarily Upward

Onward movie reviewWritten and directed by Dan Scanlon (Monsters University), the latest entry to the Pixar universe is one of the weakest in the company’s catalog. Set around broader and more generic characters than we’ve come to expect from Pixar, Onward is a story-driven tale that doesn’t hit the emotional beats nearly as well as many of the studio’s previous films. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a passable animated feature, it’s just not… magical.

Onward has the ingredients which should hit home for me personally, yet it does not. It focuses on an introverted character finding his path and involves Dungeons & Dragons role playing adventure. Maybe such themes have just been mined too long by film and TV in recent years to leave much new ground to cover.

The wacky road trip movie stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as a pair of brothers living in a fantasy world that has lost most of its magic. Given the opportunity to spend one day with the father they lost as children, the pair race to complete a spell that has only resurrected the lower-half of their dad.
