The Hobbit: Thank God It’s Finally Over

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five ArmiesPeter Jackson returns to give us the third (and thankfully final) installment of his bloated adaptation of a 300-page children’s book. As with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the best things about the final entry to the franchise are Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel and Benedict Cumberbatch providing the voice of Smaug. However, Smaug’s story ends fairly quickly (despite what the movie posters would have you believe he’s on-screen for all of 20 minutes) and the series by this point is so packed with characters (five separate armies worth) Lilly gets far-less screentime than you’d want from the movie’s most interesting character.

Since the Battle of Helm’s Deep in The Two Towers Jackson’s adaptations of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien have been a series of diminishing returns with a few bright spots (such as Smaug) that are increasingly obscured by the same CGI ogre action scenes and small character moments all of which have been done better in the previous films. And the stories aren’t easily wrapped up as Jackson continues his plodding pacing to fill yet another two-and-a-half-hour film. I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I’ve liked moments from the three separate Hobbit films, but oh my God am I thankful it’s finally over.

The Librarians - And the Horns of a Dilemma

The series’ first episode without Flynn Carson (Noah Wyle) struggles a bit as the Librarians-in-Training go after an evil corporation which has recreated the maze of the Minotaur under its offices. Wyle’s abscence leaves the show without a central character to focus the adventure around as Eve (Rebecca Romijn) has her hands full in just keeping her charges alive and the distrust between Jake (Christian Kane) and Cassandra (Lindy Booth) continues to fester.

Once Upon a Time - Shattered Sight

Condensing the effects of the latest curse to hit Storybrooke into a single episode, “Shattered Sight” wraps up most of the Frozen storylines leaving next week’s mid-season finale to say goodbye to the various characters and set up the new villains for the second-half of the show’s Fourth Season. Offering both the audience and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) a look into her forgotten past with Ingrid (Elizabeth Mitchell) the episode continues to round out the character of the Snow Queen into more tragic figure than villain whose final sacrifice makes her return to the show (other than in flashbacks) unlikely.

The Librarians - And the Sword in the Stone

After successfully recovering the crown of King Arthur, the show’s second episode, and second-half of its opening story, offers a twist where the Library is breached by a traitor in the new team’s midst leaving Flynn (Noah Wyle) cut off physically from both Library itself and his closest compatriots (Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin who, from what little we see of them here, aren’t likely to show up much over the course of the series). If retreiving both the crown and a stolen Excalibur from the Serpent Brotherhood wasn’t enough, the new team also must deal with Flynn’s mortal wound which can’t be healed.

The Librarians - And the Crown of King Arthur

Based on the series of TV-movies starring Noah Wyle as the latest in the line of secret protectors tasked with keeping potentially dangerous magical artifacts out of the hands of those who would abuse their powers comes TNT’s new drama The Librarians. Premiering ten years ago The Librarian: Quest for the Spear introduced Flynn Carsen (Wyle) and the world of the Library and I’m a little surprised it has taken a decade for TNT to decide to broaden the scope of the franchise with an ongoing series (although it’s influences can certainly be felt in shows like Warehouse 13).
