Arrow - Second Chances television review

The search for a new Black Canary leads Ollie (Stephen Amell) and company to Hub City in search of a former police detective (Juliana Harkavy) who has become something of an urban legend since a failed undercover operation in Hub City left her partner dead and her with meta-human powers not unlike those of Black Siren. Out to kill the criminal responsible for her partner’s death, the potential recruit isn’t all that receptive to Oliver’s first few pitches about becoming part of the team. Meanwhile, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) is able to help get Diggle (David Ramsey) released by re-embracing a bit of her hacker past and her run-in with a hacktavist (Kacey Rohl) inspired by the woman she used to be.

Arrow wastes no time in explaining the cliffhanger where Ollie (Stephen Amell) ran into Laurel (Katie Cassidy) in the Arrow Cave at the end of the last episode. First explaining she was brought back to life through the time traveling adventures of her sister, Laurel’s true story is revealed to be something far different. Turns out she’s not this Laurel at all. She’s actually Earth-2’s Black Siren recruited by Prometheus (who sounds more and more like Michael Dorn every week) to further frustrate Oliver.

Green Arrow #14

Green Arrow #14 comic reviewIn a packed football stadium and framed for the murder of the star quarterback during the middle of the game, Green Arrow #14 reveals the identity of the latest villain to torture Green Arrow to be the Dark Archer Malcolm Merlyn. The pair’s fight around the packed stadium may clear the Emerald Archer’s name for now, but with Merlyn still at large there’s likely to be plenty of more carnage to come.

Aside from Merlyn’s return, Green Arrow #14 is memorable for two things. First, an undercover Black Canary gets pushed into action as a member of the Seattle Police Department while snooping for evidence of Oliver being framed for murder. The second is the high body count Merlyn inflicts while fleeing from his adversary (including stabbing football players in their eyes with arrows).

Green Arrow #12 comic reviewWith Oliver Queen officially dead and the battle with the Ninth Circle over, Green Arrow and Black Canary set-out to build a new life in Seattle which includes Diggle, a treehouse, and a reluctant promise by the archer to let his alter-ego stay dead (one that it seems he has no intention of keeping). As all this is going on the issue also highlights the city’s mixed reaction to Green Arrow through a newswoman’s reporting of his various appearances and the crimes laid at his feet.

Tensions mount as Green Arrow is caught on camera stopping a violent police officer from beating up a helpless victim. As for Ollie’s company and the enemies that stole both it and his name, they find a new way to target the hero but framing him for a series of public killings by bow and arrow hoping to turn the city against him once and for all.

Arrow - What We Leave Behind

Arrow‘s mid-season finale moves beyond the Vigilante and Invasion! story arcs to center its attention back on the season’s looming big bad, Prometheus. Offering flashbacks to Oliver‘s (Stephen Amell) early days as Starling City’s vigilante (his costume has certainly gotten better), “What We Leave Behind” begins to fill in gaps about who Prometheus is and why he has a vendetta against Green Arrow (although I would have been more impressed if they actually tied it to First Season episode rather than filming new scenes). From their encounters it’s obvious the Church didn’t tell the villain anything he didn’t know, as Prometheus would have had to know Oliver’s identity years ago to retrace the man’s steps and train with at least one of the same masters (which doesn’t quite jibe with the villain’s actions since arriving in Star City as he only begin to focus on Oliver after Church’s deathbed confession).
