The Mandalorian - The Heiress television review

“The Heiress” introduces our Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) to other Mandalorians who have made appearances on both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. To do this, the show is forced to reconcile one of the largest continuity errors between it and every other version of Star Wars that has ever existed outside of The Mandalorian. This, of course, being the idea that “real” Mandalorians don’t remove their helmets in the presence of others. The episode’s workaround feels a bit half-assed, but does the necessary work to introduce the idea that our Mandalorian was raised by a cult of fanatics who instilled in him some hardline beliefs others, like those born on Mandalore, don’t follow. This allows the show to reintroduce characters with a far different take on “the way” once the battered Razor Crest touches down on Trask.

Carmen Sandiego - The Masks of Venice Caper television review

Devineaux (Rafael Petardi) gets a new partner in Agent Zari (Sharon Muthu) as A.C.M.E. sends the pair to Venice in search of Carmen Sandiego (Gina Rodriguez) who is in town to steal all the masks at an exhibit before they can fall into the hands of V.I.L.E.. “The Masks of Venice Caper” offers some fun misdirection as the episode leaves larger concerns alone in favor of a heist episode centered around staying one step ahead of both V.I.L.E. and A.C.M.E. A confused Devineaux, for the first time, suspects that there might be more going on with his quarry than he previously considered. The episode offers the return of Hideo (Michael Hagiwara) who gets a better understanding of the life his brother is now leading. Tired of Carmen’s interference, V.I.L.E. decides to lay a trap for the thief in the show’s season finale.

The Sleepover

  • Title: The Sleepover
  • IMDb: link

The Sleepover movie reviewThe Sleepover is an innocuous exercise that attempts to blend a teen comedy about a pair of siblings (Sadie Stanley and Maxwell Simkins) and their friends (Cree Cicchino and Lucas Jaye) getting into trouble while saving their parents from ninjas with a bland heist storyline involving the kids’ cliche of a suburbs father (Ken Marino) discovering his wife (Malin Akerman) is a world-class thief with an ex-fiance (Joe Manganiello) who has been living in witness protection for 15 years and is now being blackmailed into one more heist by her former partners. Got that?

The film by Trish Sie and first-time screenwriter Sarah Rothschild is an unimaginative and forgettable affair that tries to appeal to as wide of an audience as possible without actually entertaining anyone. I feel sorry for both Akerman and especially Marino, who tries his best to make the insufferable Ron funny, for not being able to turn down such a lazy affair. The wacky kid segments have a bit more going for them, but there’s nothing you haven’t seen done far better countless times before. The Sleepover is so forgettable you might end turning off the television halfway through because you forgot you were watching it.

Highlander - The Lady and the Tiger television review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to a man born in the Highlands of Scotland more than 400 years ago and a murderous game between sword-wielding immortals where there can be only one. “The Lady and the Tiger” introduces us to one of Highlander‘s best recurring characters, and the only one to get her own spin-off. A trip to the circus reunites MacLeod (Adrian Paul) with Amanda (Elizabeth Gracen), a thief and former lover who has left Duncan holding the bag several times over the centuries (an example of which we see in the flashbacks). The episode never explains the coincidence of the pair’s reunion as Amanda seems as surprised to see Duncan in the big top as he is to see her on the high wire. The episode also introduces Amanda’s former partner Zachary Blaine (Jason Isaacs) who escapes a prison transport in the opening scene with plans on killing Amanda, at least until she offers to help him take MacLeod’s head instead.

Black Cat #11

Black Cat #11 comic reviewThe comic’s opening arc continues as Black Cat has managed to steal all the pieces for the Randall Gate. Now all that’s missing for Black Fox‘s planned heist of the Thieves Guild is the key to turning the thing on. In a comic that has featured Felicia breaking in to the who’s who of the Marvel Universe, could there be anywhere else to retrieve it but Stark Unlimited?

Despite my having serious doubts about Stark security not being able to recognize Felicia Hardy in a wig, I’ll admit the comic has fun with Felicia playing on Tony Stark’s weakness for both redheads and women who enjoy verbally sparring with him. With the help of a little tech allowing her to temporarily pass for Stark where the building’s automated systems are concerned and a patsy to drag Iron Man’s attention elsewhere, Felicia is able to work her way to the Stark Nanoforge and forge the Dimensional Resonator.
