Heist

Black Cat #5

Black Cat #5 comic reviewTwo series worth of heists (and Marvel’s ridiculous need to reboot and restart numbering comics arbitrarily) has led us here. Over 17 issues, when not distracted by the world being attacked by some weird symbiotic entity, Black Cat has carefully chosen specific targets within the super-hero community to aquire the tools necessary to rob Odessa Drake and the New York branch of the Thieves Guild. However, it seems her mentor the Black Fox hasn’t told her everything about his plans.

Opening with a look back at Felicia and the Fox as student and mentor, then discovering the Fox has been keeping secrets from her, I half expected some kind of double-cross here. Instead, the Black Fox’s true motives are revealed to rob the Guild not of their jewels but the immortality they receive from their partnership with the Guilded Saint (an extradimensional creature) by offering the creature a prize like none other – the island of Manhattan.

Black Cat #4

Black Cat #4 comic reviewWith the “King in Black” crossover complete, before moving Black Cat on to her next heist, Black Cat stops to examine the perspective of Queen Cat who has been watching and tracking Felicia for several months. I’m not wild about the art here with Nina Vakueva taking over duties with this issue. While Queen Cat works well enough, a character we don’t know as well, Felicia never comes out quite right.

Presented entirely from the perspective of Queen Cat, the issue fills in some of the backstory for the character as a Hob-Hero (volunteers who were turned into a would-be heroes by the Hobgoblin) and helps explain a bit of her obsession with the Black Cat who she wants to take down and replace.

Batman - Trouble Identity television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to Gotham City and The New Adventures of Batman. Professor Norquist’s Inert Matter Converter allows him to turn garbage into valuable fabric such as silk or fur. Catwoman (Melendy Britt), donned in a bizarre costume designed for the series, not only steals the invention in front of Bruce Wayne (Adam West), Dick Grayson (Burt Ward), and Barbara Gordon (Britt) but also frames Batgirl for the crime by making a quick-change in the middle of the robbery to appear as Batgirl (rather than show up dressed as the hero throughout the entire heist).

Black Cat #2

Black Cat #2 comic reviewA tie-in to Marvel’s “King in Black” storyline which involves Knull arriving on Earth and sending an army of symbiotes to take down Earth’s heroes in New York, Black Cat #2 features a mission for the Marvel Universe’s best thief – steal one of Knull’s most valuable prisoners from underneath the God’s nose.

While rescuing Doctor Strange may not be as fun as stealing from him, the issue does present interesting challenges for Felicia Hardy and still offers a strong build up to the heist. Black Cat #2 is a solid issue that fits into a larger storyline without forcing readers to track down other issues in order to make sense of things (which is good because I have no interest in reading any more about Knull than I need to).

MacGyver - Thief + Painting + Auction + Viro-486 + Justice television review

I haven’t watched much of the CBS reboot of the 80s MacGyver. What I have seen has been more MacGyverish or Team MacGyver compared to the original. The latest episode, and the first I’ve watched in several seasons, features not one but two art thefts. Ah, I just can’t resist a heist. Aimee Mullins guest-stars as former art thief extraordinaire Jess Miller whose career was cut short by a horrific leg injury. Blackmailed into helping, Miller trains Desi (Levy Tran) to break into a weapon dealer’s safe to retrieve a bio-weapon before it can be sold to terrorists. The heist, and training exercises, offers a host of challenges in terms of a locked room, safe, lasers, and sensors, all which need to be beaten within a minute. Oh, and then there’s the twist.
