The Bad Guys - A Very Bad Holiday

Set prior to the events of The Bad Guys, with the thieves still working on the wrong side of the law, The Bad Guys – A Very Bad Holiday gives us the anthropomorphic villains scrambling to save Christmas (and their planned big holiday heist) after their actions unintentionally ruin the holiday for the entire town. Trying to do the right thing for the wrong reason, and sucking at it, provides the crux of the holiday special that fans of the original movie may enjoy (although it’s not one of the more memorable animated holiday specials).

I’m a fan of heist movies and of director and star Mélanie Laurent, as well as co-star Adèle Exarchopoulos, so I was already predisposed to like the French film about two thieves (Exarchopoulos and Laurent) being forced into one more job by their their unreasonable employer (Isabelle Adjani). With a mostly female cast, driver Manon Bresch is added to the pair as a new trainee, the film has both a feminine and French feel more centered on the relationships between these women than the job at hand.

Carmen Sandiego - The Beijing Bullion Caper

The final season of Carmen Sandiego opens with another win for Carmen Sandiego (Gina Rodriguez) who prevents V.I.L.E. agents Lady Dokuso (Sumalee Montano) and Mime Bomb from kidnapping a dignitary with access to China’s gold reserve. The episode is notable for the dignitary’s kick-ass daughter Xifeng (Krista Marie Yu) whose quick reflexes and attention to detail help save the day and A.C.M.E. still having no clue as to Carmen’s true motivations, ignoring the testimony of Graham Calloway (Michael Goldsmith) in favor of the suspicions of the ever unreliable Chase Devineaux (Rafael Petardi).

Taking advantage of Pam Grier‘s history blaxploitation films, Quentin Tarantino cast her in the title role of his 1997 adaptation of Elmore Leonard‘s novel Rum Punch. More than a quarter of a century later it remains the only non-original film Tarantino has created (which is interesting as some, although not me, argue it just may be his best work). Grier’s inclusion easily lets the viewer tie this film to her earlier works in film like Coffy and immediately understand the tone Tarantino is going for with the stylish Jackie Brown.

The opening of her family’s casino brings the return of Ann Villegas (Max Collins) whose distrust of security expert Barton Coyne (Joel Pierce), and threats about a potential robbery, forces her to enlist the help of Alex Walker (Christian Kane) to test out the casino’s security… by robbing it. Putting a small crew together with Kai (Samantha Richelle) and Ernesto (Art Acuñ), Alex and his group successfully pull off a robbery to highlight gaps in the casino’s security only to discover other thieves piggybacked on their plan, with the help of one of the crew posing as a hostess in the casino (Erika Heynatz), and stole millions more.
