Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Faith

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Faith comic reviewI’ll admit, I fell off a bit with my reading of rebooted Buffy and Angel comics with the whole Hellmouth crossover. I’ve picked up a bit here and there, and that’s what made me notice this new 40-page one-shot centered around Faith. The issue offers a glimpse of Faith prior to her introduction in Sunnydale but after she became noticed by the Watchers Council as a potential Slayer (Or became a Slayer? It’s confusing).

The mix of a rebooted universe where you are not sure how much history has carried over, the hit-and-miss schedule I’ve taken recently with the various comics, and not knowing exactly where the comic fits in to the overall timeline all added to my overall confusion here. The story is relatively simple, the Watchers are fucking with Faith, testing her in a movie theater against vampires, wiping her mind, and starting over.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #22

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #22 comic reviewIn many ways Buffy the Vampire Slayer #22 feels like the calm before the storm as we’re taken around Sunnydale on the eve of pending events. There are several pieces to the latest issue of the rebooted Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic, but the common thread seems to be characters seeming lost or out of place.

We see to characters in astral form seeking answers, both the lost Willow and the former slayer Morgan Palmer (who has taken up with Anya to get revenge against the Watcher’s Council, although she seems less sure of her decision the more time she spends looking in on Buffy and Giles).

The Stand - Pocket Savior / Blank Pages television review

The second and third episodes of CBS’ new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand focus on introducing more of the novel’s long list of characters. Here we get musician Larry Underwood (Jovan Adepo) who spends some time with the tragic Rita (Heather Graham) before continuing west on his own and coming across Nadine (Amber Heard) and Joe (Gordon Cormier). We also meet Lloyd Henreid (Nat Wolff) who is the first character we see approached and successfully recruited by Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård) for his community in Las Vegas and the deaf-mute Nick Andros (Henry Zaga) who refuses Flagg’s offer and becomes Mother Abagail‘s (Whoopi Goldberg) voice in Colorado. We also see the first meeting of Stu Redman (James Marsden) and Harold Lauder (Owen Teague) and Frannie Goldsmith (Odessa Young) on the road which doesn’t turn out as Stu planned, but he does make another acquaintance in Glen Bateman (Greg Kinnear).

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #19

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #19 comic reviewIt’s been a bit since I read a Buffy comic. There’s an awful lot happening in Buffy the Vampire Slayer #19. First, we get astral Willow checking in on her former best bud turned vampire Xander Harris. The scene has a mix of melancholy mixed in to the pair’s usual banter. We also get to see a bit of Kendra (Slayer #2) and Rose (Willow’s ex-girlfriend) together. When did this happen? Nice to see Kendra getting a bit more developed in the revamped Buffyverse. And Buffy, no matter what timeline it is, is still struggling with relationships.

This issue also gives us Willow astral moseying on a dark omen of things to come just before the first appearance of Faith (Slayer #3). Three Slayers, no waiting! I’ve missed quite a bit, but there’s some promise in this issue that rekindles the interest that was dampened by the hit-and-miss Hellmouth crossover.

Angel + Spike #15

Angel + Spike #15 comic reviewThe reimagined Buffy/Angel universe continues to chug along as Angel and Spike rely on the help of Oz, who they come to realize isn’t the werewolf they are looking for, to track down the real source of several werewolf attacks across Los Angeles. The search entails Spike being uncharacteristically helpful in making a new friend.

The change in creative teams is certainly obvious here. Artist Hayden Sherman goes for a very blocky style that takes some getting used to, and one I’m still struggling with. As for Oz, without the relationship to Willow in this reality his past is a little less clear (although he did reside in Sunnydale, where he was transformed into a werewolf).
