Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #22The calm before the storm. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #22 takes a step back from the ongoing battle of Buffy and the Scoobies with all manner of demons being let into this reality by the stolen “Restless Door” to focus on relationships central to the series and lay the foundation for potential problems somewhere down the line.

While initially apprehensive, Willow finds the military’s offer to help use her unique knowledge of technology and magic to keep the worlds safe appealing. Buffy on the other hand is less inclined to forget her past dealings with the military as the comic teases a split between best friends who may be starting to grow apart. While the issue makes sure to bring the two women together before the end, the disagreement that caused the fight is far from settled suggesting it may return to raise its ugly head before the end of the season.

Chowing down on the dead girl’s brains doesn’t help Liv‘s (Rose McIver) love life as she becomes increasingly suspicious and jealous of any woman in Major‘s (Robert Buckley) life, but it does help solve the case (even if it means a short stint in prison where her brain-hunger almost causes severe problems for her annoying cell mate).

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #21The U.S. Army wants Buffy!? Armageddon makes for strange bedfellows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten kicks off with a new arc featuring the return of some fan-favorite characters when Satsu comes to town dropping names like Riley Finn to recruit Buffy to help stop the number of demons being brought into our world to wreak havoc. The first job the Army has for our vampire slayer and her blondey bear boyfriend? To help recruit vampires to their cause. Did I mention that the vampires include Harmony and Vicki?

Following the debate between Buffy and Satsu of slayers joining the army (immediately preceding by the awkwardness of Buffy’s bisexual encounter showing up on her doorstep) the issue focuses on the challenges of Buffy and Spike dealing with the new vampire alliance who not only demand the pair of heroes defeat their champions in trial by combat but also spend time attempting to undermine the couple’s new-found bliss.

Merging her coach’s can-do attitude, the need for the team without a coach, and seizing up Major’s need to reconnect with the man he used to be, Liv sets up her former boyfriend with a new position hoping the coaching job will help Major reconnect with the reason he became a social worker in the first place. Meanwhile Major struggles with his list of possible zombies, refusing to kill a loving father and husband who is living out his life without letting his new condition effect his loved ones. No doubt Major’s mercy, especially if continued, will have consequences for the zombie killer down the line.
