HomefrontAdapted from Chuck Logan‘s novel of the same name by Sylvester Stallone, Homefront stars Jason Statham as former DEA Agent Phil Broker who moves with his young daughter (Izabela Vidovic) to a small town in the Louisiana Bayou after Broker’s last undercover assignment leaves both the former agent and young Maddy with prices on their heads by a biker gang out for blood.

Better written than many of Statham’s films, Homefront casts Kate Bosworth and Marcus Hester as a quarrelsome couple whose son gets into an altercation at school. Not letting the matter rest the mother enlists the help of her villainous brother (James Franco) which leads to all kinds of hell eventually erupting around the sleepy small town. Playing on basic themes of revenge and an unbeatable but reluctant hero unwilling to be pushed too far, the film works as a very well-trod B-movie action-thriller.

ParkerJason Statham stars as Donald Westlake‘s Parker, a career criminal and anti-hero who keeps to his own code and often, as in this case of this adaptation of Westlake’s novel Flashfire, has to fight for what’s owed him after being double-crossed on the latest score. Statham isn’t the first actor to portray Westlake’s character (Lee Marvin, Jim Brown, Robert Duvall, Peter Coyote, Mel Gibson all played character over the years), but Parker is the first where the title character keeps the name.

The movie begins with a heist of $1,000,000 from an Ohio State Fair by Parker and a group of thieves (Michael Chiklis, Wendell Pierce, Clifton Collins Jr., Micah A. Hauptman) he has never worked with before who take his cut from the job and leave him for dead on the side of the road. The rest of the film revolves around Parker following the group to Palm Beach and shadowing their latest score with the help of a local Realtor (Jennifer Lopez) before finally taking his revenge.

killer-elite-posterTired of killing, the world’s best mercenary (Jason Statham) calls it quits only to be pulled out of retirement a year later by an oil sheikh (Rodney Afif) who holds one of his oldest friends (Robert De Niro) hostage to make sure Danny takes the job.

It seems a few years back the British S.A.S. killed three of the sheikh’s four sons. Now he wants vengeance before he dies and has chosen Danny to be the instrument of that revenge. In return he’ll release his friend and agree to pay Danny and his team (Dominic Purcell, Aden Young) $6,000,000.

Simple, right? Well it would be if it wasn’t for the fact that the Her Majesty’s Special Air Service are the best trained soldiers in the world. And if you didn’t know that going in the movie will remind you, more than once (except, of course, when our hero needs to dispatch nameless agents with relative ease).

The Mechanic

Remakes, Hollywood’s second favorite shortcut (after sequels) for quickly churning out mediocre flicks. If I have seen the original 1972 film with Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent I don’t remember it. And there’s nothing in the remake that makes me think I’ve missed anything.

This version stars Jason Statham as hitman Arthur Bishop who takes on the son (Ben Foster) of a old friend (Donald Sutherland) he was forced to kill.

As action flicks go this version by director Simon West is average at best. There’s plenty of poor decision making and plot holes where the story is sacrificed for more action scenes. I also found the film’s main villain (played by Tony Goldwyn) to be rather bland. His near limitless supply of generic soldiers are even less memorable than he is. If a movie is only as good as its villain The Mechanic is pretty damn forgettable.

Transporter 3

That’s right Transporter 3 stands for 3 razors. Seriously it does what it sat out to accomplish: 1. Lots of ass-kicking action (clothing optional) 2. Car chases, crashes, floating and train jumping and last, but not least 3. Independent films have an action hero and his name is Jason (OMG he so hot) Statham. No seriously Transporter 3 is just that, part 3 to a chain of films that rock on the choreographed fight scenes, but come up short in content and quality acting.

I simply can’t go into this review from a serious point of view; Transporter 3 is a wonderful release to the melodrama and uptight contender season. Something that all action fans can set back and enjoy without thinking a whole lot.

Rule #1. Never change the deal. And that is exactly what the director did, he didn’t change a thing. Cuter girl, maybe, a little more adventurous car scenes, for sure and a certain amount of new humor, but overall it’s like the rest, simply a little better.
