Scarecrow and Mrs. King – Magic Bus

Throwback Thursday takes us to 80s Washington, D.C. and the unusual partnership between a housewife and a spy. The more technical aspects of “Magic Bus” haven’t aged all that gracefully (even for the time, the episode is pretty goofy). The storyline involves a new prototype disguised as a RV that gets stolen from Amanda‘s (Kate Jackson) driveway by a group of survivalists blackmailing the government to release imprisoned members of their organization. Not exactly Bond-level tech here, even for the 80s, the RV feels even more quaint in 2022.

Charlie’s Angels – Magic Fire

Throwback Thursday takes us back to the tale of three beautiful former police officers turned private detectives working for a faceless boss known as Charlie. “Magic Fire” is an odd episode that merges a story about magic, arson, and fashion together. While eventually the threads do come together, it’s easily one of the more awkward setups of the series as police suspect a magician (E.J. André) who uses fire in his act of setting fires despite having no motive to do so. Looking into other magic acts, Bosley (David Doyle) and Kris (Cheryl Ladd) go undercover in their own act and Kelly (Jaclyn Smith) plays the role of a famous magician’s daughter. The show telegraphs the identity of the arsonist (Victoria Carroll) with a prank on Kris, although none of the Angels pick up on it.

Sent to the hospital for both his injured knee and overdue physical, Lee becomes the new subject of a former Agency scientist (Michael Fairman) now working at the hospital responsible for the previous agent’s behavior. Charlie’s Angels – Angels in the Wings

Throwback Thursday takes us back to the tale of three beautiful former police officers turned private detectives working for a faceless boss known as Charlie. “Angels in the Wings” is an unusual episode as much of the time is set aside for song and dance numbers (which are actually quite good) rather than mystery solving. The Angels are called in to investigate a cursed theater after an actress (Shani Wallis) is almost killed by the latest accident on-stage. While there are subplots offered in terms of her estranged son (Nicolas Beauvy) and her ex-husband’s (Gene Barry) gambling debts and unwillingness to do the show, there’s not much of a mystery and much of the Angels’ investigation takes place off-camera.

After the agency ties the smuggling of weapons to a Washington suburb, Scarecrow (Bruce Boxleitner) and Amanda (Kate Jackson) are sent in undercover to play husband and wife. While the episode starts with the spy turning Amanda away from agency work, hoping to be rid of her, he quicky has to turn on a dime when he’s ordered into the suburbs with the only person who can show him the ropes. And once again, Amanda will prove her worth in helping uncover the truth of another fine mess Scarecrow has gotten them into.
