Bull - Parental Guidance television review

The latest client for Bull (Michael Weatherly) and his associates is a defendant who is admittedly guilty of the crime he is charged with. A teenager (C.J. Valleroy) who lived nearly his entire life in isolation with his paranoid survalist father is left on his own after his father his killed and he is arrested for shooting at a police officer and social worker who were trespassing on thier property. To win over the jury, Benny (Freddy Rodríguez) works to convince the jury that young man was ignorant of the consequences of his actions, but to win the case they will have to prove just the opposite. “Parental Guidance” offers a clever late twist that rather than sink the lawyers’ case, actually offers them a new avenue to explore and not only get justice for their client but provide for a future for a young man lost in the new world he finds himself in without his father.

Bull - Forfeiture television review

Tensions run high as Chunk (Chris Jackson) takes on his first case in defending a young man (Astro) facing up to a decade in prison for selling knock-offs out of the back of his grandfather’s (Ben Vereen) barbershop while Benny (Freddy Rodríguez) represents the grandfather whose shop has been seized by the FBI. Despite the counsel offered by Bull (Michael Weatherly) and Benny, Chunk takes a risky defensive strategy admitting his client’s guilt but only because the FBI entrapped him into committing a crime he would not have sought out on his own. With two cases and lawyers not on the same page, “Forfeiture” provides a solid episode fueled by Chunk’s passion and indignation at what was done to his client in the name of justice (something he proves more than capable of helping the jury see as well). Vareen steals a few minutes as well including the grandfather’s testimony on the stand for his grandson while ignoring what possible damage it might mean to his own case.

On the Basis of Sex

On the Basis of Sex movie reviewOn the Basis of Sex examines Ruth Bader Ginsburg‘s (Felicity Jones) road from one of only a handful of women granted entry into Harvard to arguing a landmark decision in front of the US Court of Appeals, while fighting sexual discrimination in some form or another every step of the way.

Broken into two parts, the film examines the discrimination and struggles Ruth went through both in college and as a graduate unable to find any firm interested in hiring a female litigator. While there’s plenty about the woman’s life left untold, such as the span and scope of her career following these events, the film spends quite a bit of time on Ginsburg’s family life and personal struggles which dovetails into the larger themes of the script allowing for the plot to climax in Ginsbrug’s argument before the US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in the first case of her career. Jones proves to be the movie’s greatest strength, handling a complex range of emotions over the course of the film leading to Ginsburg’s big moment and, as the film frames it, finding her purpose.

Woman in Gold

Woman in GoldDirector Simon CurtisWoman in Gold is an odd film not good enough for awards consideration but also choosing not to become an action-suspense film about stolen Nazi art. Much more a straightforward drama, I’d compare it to 1998’s A Civil Action, a more engaging film with a similar arc of a lawyer whose money-first philosophy is changed by taking on an emotional case he can’t possibly win.

Based on the true story of Maria Altmann‘s (Helen Mirren) attempts to regain possession of her family’s lost masterpiece from the Austrian government, Woman in Gold is a slow-moving drama starring Ryan Reynolds as the lawyer hired by Maria to take on a foreign government. Reynolds and Mirren work well together as the unlikely pair to take on Austria (even if Reynolds casting seems like an odd choice). Well-acted and shot against the backdrops of Vienna and southern California, the story is intriguing if never fully engaging. Despite its cast (which also includes Katie Holmes, Tatiana Maslany, Elizabeth McGovern, and Jonathan Pryce) Woman in Gold is a good film that never fully lives up to the promise it offers flashes of early on.

Fairly Legal - Season TwoAfter a limited release on DVD to select sellers a few months back, the final season of USA’s Fairly Legal got a full release last week. The show starred Sarah Shahi as the lovable but impossible to get along with Kate, a former lawyer turned negotiator who had more success in resolving other people’s problems than her own. The show’s Second Season introduced Ryan Johnson as Ben, the the ambulance chaser turned partner at Reed & Reed, creating a love triangle between Kate, Ben, and Kate’s ex-husband Justin (Michael Trucco).

The Second Season’s highlights include Kate meeting Ben in the season premiere, a job for Judge Nicastro (Gerald McRaney), the mediation between an engineer trying to expose his former company’s dangerous new engine designs, saving an apartment owner from loosing his building because of a single rowdy tenant, investigating the true reasons a young girl (Jonna Walsh) was expelled from a prestigious private school, mediating a prison hunger strike, and the season’s (and show’s) final episode.
