In an episode that offers the return of Loretta (Meryl Streep), who returns under sad circumstances of her apartment burning down, the investigation turns towards the widows of the two murder victims when Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) discover a potentially suspicious link between the pair. Loretta and Oliver’s doesn’t turn up a killer, but their little undercover mission does allow Oliver to share a bit of his childhood with Loretta and reconsider the possibility of leaving the Arconia. Only Murder in the Building - Valley of the Dolls

Fleeing the Arconia, “Valley of the Dolls” gives us Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) hiding out in the suburbs with Charles’ sister Doreen (Melissa McCarthy) hoping to save themselves from the killer watching them and find some space to solve the murder. Howard‘s (Michael Cyril Creighton) decision to tell everyone where they are basically makes the first part of their plan moot, as Bev (Molly Shannon) and then Zach GalifianakisEugene Levy, and Eva Longoria, and later Loretta (Meryl Streep) as well. This will force Oliver to confront his romantic issues, which will (somewhat annoyingly) yo-yo all over the place before settling back down, while also fighting off the advances of Charles’ sister.

Only Murders in the Building - Thirty / Opening Night

In the final two episodes of the season, our podcasters manage to put together the series of events that led to murder of Ben (Paul Rudd) and manage to put on an opening night performance without anyone dying on stage. The bulk of the investigation takes place in “Thirty,” named for being Mabel‘s (Selena Gomez) thirtieth birthday which she spends happily with Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) coming up with a new suspect that is neither Dickie (Jeremy Shamos) nor Loretta (Meryl Streep). In the season finale, the trio manage to get their easiest confession yet, although it turns out not to be the full story.
