Hawaii Five-0 - Ahuwale ka nane hūnā television review

Harry Langford (Chris Vance) returns to the islands working as protection for a British royal (Kate Beahan) and her teenage daughter (Alana Boden). When the daughter sneaks out of her protection detail, Steve (Alex O’Loughlin) and Danny (Scott Caan) help Harry track the girl down before the wrong type of people discover she’s unprotected on the island. Really just an excuse to get Vance back on the show, “I Ka Wa Ma Mua, I Ka Wa Ma Hope” is one of the more enjoyable episodes of the season with a nice balance of tension and humor. I smiled more than once when the show worked in Danny’s parenting skills of a precocious teenage daughter.

Lucifer - The Angel of San Bernardino television review

Maze‘s (Lesley-Ann Brandt) dark turn continues this week as she helps Pierce (Tom Welling) gaslight Lucifer (Tom Ellis) by turning the devil’s attention away from the immortal moving in on his girl while distracting him with the idea that his father may be controlling him in his sleep. Refusing to go back to sleep, Lucifer’s behavior only becomes more erratic while Chloe (Lauren German) comes awfully close to giving Pierce exactly what he wants. The cruelty by Maze is chilling while an out-of-control, and therefore unbelievable, Lucifer attempts to unsuccessfully spill the beans to the detective about who exactly she is sharing her bed with.

Silk Stalkings - Going to Babylon television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the unsolved crimes of passion in the wealthy playground of Palm Beach, Florida. A pair of suspicious deaths, involving an older man found in his car of an apparent heart attack and a dead prostitute found in her car across town, send Chris (Rob Estes) and Rita (Mitzi Kapture) into the seedier side of Palm Springs kinky underbelly in a case that will make Rita confront some personal demons. Fairly quickly the pair are able to identify the swinging couple of old man Cameron (R.G. Armstrong) and his younger wife (Deborah Rennard) as those responsible for both deaths. Neither the pair’s attempt to frame their son’s college friend (Chris Browning) for the murder not a snitch (J.C. Quinn) giving away Chris and Rita’s identities on an undercover sting will prevent the Chris and Rita from closing the case.

Lucifer - The Last Heartbreak TV review

While investigating a double-homicide reminiscent of one that Pierce (Tom Welling) solved decades ago in one of his former lives, Lucifer (Tom Ellis) struggles to adjust to the world’s oldest murderer cozying up to Chloe (Lauren German). “The Last Heartbreak” is memorable mostly for giving us our first real glimpse into some of Cain’s past. Despite the obvious attraction between the pair, it’s obvious well-before the final reveal that Cain has decided to pursue Chloe not out of that attraction but for purely selfish reasons related to his desire to end his immortality.

Tomb Raider (2018)Lara Croft is back. After the pair of financially successful (if pretty dumb) films starring Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s, the most famous video game archaeologist (sorry Mr. Jones) returns to the big screen. Because origin stories are all the rage, the latest Tomb Raider (following in the footsteps of the character’s more recent comic adventures) takes Lara back to the beginning to showcase how she became the world’s best tomb raider.

Alicia Vikander is a solid choice for a younger version of the character showcasing skills she hasn’t yet completely mastered. More grounded, with less emphasis on staging sequences for the sole reason to make her look cool, it’s certainly a more dramatic role that Jolie was given. The storyline, while taking a bit long to get going, is also better than either of the previous two movies as this time around Lara goes all Oliver Queen on a lost island where evil mercenaries hope to uncover a dangerous tomb. As an action film based on a video game Tomb Raider is surprisingly successful, even if, at times, certain sequences feel based more on questionable video-game logic than solid writing.
