Lucifer - They're Back, Aren't They? TV review

Season Three begins with a twist. While the cliffhanger of Lucifer‘s (Tom Ellis) kidnapping at the end of Season Two is central to the plot of the season premiere, it’s not what we expect. Lucifer returns after two days in the desert to find that no one missed him. Chloe (Lauren German) just assumed he flaked again and doesn’t put much credence in his story. The discovery of a murdered man buried in the desert does help convince the detective that there is a case, although Lucifer has other problems to deal with as well besides his partner’s distrust.

Hawaii Five-0 - A'ole e 'olelo mai ana ke ahi ua ana ia TV review

Most, but not all, of Hawaii Five-0‘s cast returns for the show’s Eighth Season which gets off to a rocky start. The departure of Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park as series regulars opens the door for the new character of Tani Rey (Meaghan Rath), a brash young recruit who joins the team after a hacker (Joey Lawrence) releases a mad arsonist (Randy Couture) from prison. Honestly, I’m not sure Park and Kim could have helped save this episode which offers not one but two cliched bad guys, hacker computer magic, and half the island on fire to show off that McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) is still the show’s resident Superman (despite the foreshadowing of potential health issues for the character).

Elementary - The Complete Fifth Season DVD review

Hoping to artificially instill some continuity to the show’s Fifth Season, the first episode of the year introduces us to Joan‘s (Lucy Liu) former patient and reformed gangbanger Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis). Shinwell’s issues will be a recurring theme throughout the year as Sherlock‘s (Jonny Lee Miller) attempts to help the man infiltrate and bring down a local gang have consequences for everyone involved. Sherlock’s odd behavior, getting even odder towards the end of the year, will culminate in his conversations with a stranger (Joanna Christie) and larger implications for his partnership with Watson heading into Season Six.

While far from the show’s strongest season, highlights include the death of a magician, murder and pirate gold, the return of Kitty (Ophelia Lovibond), a desperate client, Holmes struggling with attending his AA meetings, and the murder of a mathematician.
