Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #10

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #10A museum putting on display of a cursed ruby in their Egypt exhibit brings both Mystery, Inc. and Johnny Quest‘s family to investigate. It doesn’t take long for things to pick up with the appearance of a mummy who steals the jewel.

In Scooby-Doo fashion the culprit is unmasked as a henchman of the evil Dr. Zin who has nefarious plans for the jewel which means a journey for all of the investigators to Monster Island (which thankfully is populated with man-made monsters, also keeping with Scooby tradition) in order to save the day.

To this point I’ve much preferred the issues of Scooby-Doo! Team-Up involving Scooby and the gang teaming up with various super-heroes than various Hanna-Barbara characters, but Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #10 is quite fun as the gang joins forces with the Quest family to solve a mystery. The mummy and the theft of the jewel create a natural crossover for the teams while providing some fun moments between various characters (including Scooby and Bandit discussing their crazy human counterparts). Worth a look.

White Collar - The Complete Sixth SeasonAfter six years on the air White Collar comes to an end with this shortened final season consisting of only six episodes centering around Neal‘s (Matt Bomer) final case for the FBI helping to take down a secret organization of elite criminals known as the Pink Panthers. Complicating Neal’s mission is the reappearance of Keller (Ross McCall) also working his way into the Panthers (and also secretly working for a government agency) and Neal’s own complicated plan to leave the FBI on his terms.

Highlights include the season premiere in which Peter (Tim DeKay) tracks down the kidnapped Neal, Neal is forced by the Panthers to destroy an innocent young woman (Laura Ramsey), and Peter joins the final con to help take the Panthers down. White Collar‘s wrap and Covert Affairs cancellation conclude a slew of enjoyable USA Network shows leaving the network a mostly barren landscape. It will be missed.

The two-disc set includes all 6 episodes, a retrospective of the show, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and a pair of audio commentaries for the series finale.

The Mentalist - The Complete Seventh SeasonWith Red John defeated, half of the cast having moved on to other projects, and consisting only 13 episodes collected on three discs, the final season of The Mentalist feels more like an epilogue than than a full season of the show. Along with the case of the week, the season will continue to deal with the now romantic relationship between Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) culminating in the pair’s wedding in the series finale.

Emily Swallow doesn’t return but the series replaces her with Josie Loren as fresh-faced new Agent Michelle Vega who tragically won’t live to see the end of the season. Other highlights include Jane and Lisbon feeling out their relationship in the season premiere, Lisbon going undercover in jail, Lisbon temporarily taking on the role of fake psychic, and the much-anticipated return of Erica Flynn (Morena Baccarin). Extras include deleted scenes and a look back at Jane’s journey over the course of the series.

Elementary - A Controlled Descent

In terms of mysteries the Season Three episode of Elementary is weakest of the series but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deliver in other ways. The abduction of Alfredo (Ato Essandoh) by Holmes’ old drug associate Oscar (Michael Weston), who demands the detective’s help in locating his missing sister, sends Holmes down a dark path in a finale that deals with Holmes’ inner demons, his addiction, his guilt, and a growing frustration with a situation he can not control. It’s immediately clear what Oscar is really after, but it does take the detective time to piece the series of events together and deduce the reasons behind Oscar darkening Holmes’ door once more.

Castle‘s Seventh Season comes to a close with a variation of a throwaway line Castle (Nathan Fillion) offered Beckett (Stana Katic) early in the show’s First Season as to how he became obsessed with writing about murder. The discovery of a victim with odd markings on her body and the recollections of a single witness bring back memories for the mystery writer as Castle tells Beckett the story of the first murder victim he ever saw in a story so odd, with no evidence to back it up other than the similarities with the new case, that even Castle began to question whether or not it was real.
