Following the theme of the season in which various episodes highlight a single character, although his sexuality doesn’t become common knowledge, the drama behind Wheeler‘s (Patrick Fischler) impending divorce takes center stage and will even play into the murder of the week when the NIS Special Agent in Charge will have to decide whether or not to reveal an alibi given by a career military man, clearing him of the crime, puts him in violation of the uniform code. Mostly an excuse for Wheeler to lose hit shit in the office, the plot does offer a couple of strong scenes between Wheeler and Mary Jo (Tyla Abercrumbie) proving once again why she is the most indispensable member of the office.

Murder Mystery Monday takes us back to the television detective who always had one more thing to ask. The first episode of Columbo to air (outside of the two pilots which have notable differences to the ongoing series of TV-movies), hits the ground running with most of the staples of the show including showing us the murder by the guest-star Jack Cassidy, as one-half of a writing team who kills off his partner (Martin Milner). Believing he has gotten away with the perfect murder, our killer isn’t ready for the rumpled detective to take the scene with a series of innocuous questions eventually finding the evidence to get his man.

Wake Up Dead Man

Rian Johnson‘s Knives Out, which introduced us to world-famous detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), was my favorite film of 2019 featuring a perfect blend of mystery, drama, and comedy. Three years later Johnson and Craig would return for the notably more comedic Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. And, now, three years later they return for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery which, although it still contains humor and wit (especially in the first half-hour), overcorrects to be the darkest and most serious of the three films.

We don’t get very many mainstream animated feature films centered around a mystery, especially from Disney. While the 2016 film wasn’t as big a hit as Finding Dory, it still cleaned up at the box office and earned enough to deliver a new mystery to be solved by our intrepid bunny and wiley fox team (even if it did take nearly a decade).
