Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049 movie reviewGood news, bad news. Blade Runner 2049 isn’t as good as the original. It’s also far better than I expected from a sequel no one really ever wanted to see made. While I’d expect the initial reception to be better than the original Blade Runner, the sequel’s plot does have serious plot holes which multiple viewings are likely to further expose.

Set 30 years after the first film (coinciding with the similar gap between the original and the sequel), the world still has plenty of runaway replicants which need to be found and retired. While Deckard (Harrison Ford) has long-since disappeared, the role of our main Blade Runner this time around is played by Ryan Gosling.

Director Denis Villeneuve offers a visually interesting film with several nods to Blade Runner. While the story is more complicated than necessary, and requires characters to ignore specific questions which seem obvious to ask, K’s (Gosling) journey and the mystery he’s tasked to solve does keep things on track (even if Villeneuve gets stuck multiple times dragging out shots and scenes for the visual style long after the plot has been satisfied).

The Orville - About a Girl television review

The third episode of The Orville makes a dramatic turn after two episodes setting up the show as sitcom with Star Trek trappings. “About a Girl” centers around the Orville’s second officer Lt. Commander Bortus (Peter Macon) and his mate Klyden (Chad L. Coleman) whose baby is born female – a cultural deformity according to the pair’s race. After Dr. Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald) refuses to perform a sex change on the infant, Bortus and Klyden request assistance from their government leading to a trial on their homeworld with Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki) pleading for the baby to remain female.

Darth Vader #5

Darth Vader #5 comic reviewAfter defeating Jedi Master Kirak Infil’a, Darth Vader has one last piece of business before claiming his trademark red lightsaber. Sent to Mustafar by the Emperor, the Dark Lord of the Sith will face one final challenge in his attempt to bend the Kyber crystal to his will and create his trademark blade.

The last bit of this arc details with the questionable decision to have a Sith change a Kyber crystal in order to force the crystals to delve into the Dark Side of the Force. As a story point having the crystal “bleed” red is awkward at best. That said, the final issue of the arc offers an interesting look into the internal conflict within the Sith who was once Anakin Skywalker. Given a vision by the crystal we see what might have been if Vader would turn against his master and reclaim his role as Jedi.

Samurai Jack - Episode VIII: Jack versus Mad Jack TV review

While it’s jam-packed with action and features Samurai Jack (Phil LaMarr) literally fighting a manifestation of his internal demons, “Episode VIII” is one of the least memorable of the series. Opening with an extended sequence in which Jack’s battle with a bar full of bounty hunters which spills out into the forest, Aku (Mako) decides to raise the stakes by pitting the samurai against an evil doppelganger. Of course, the frenzied Jack eventually gets his emotions under control and is able to realize the situation he finds himself in. Our hero is able to regain his composure, defeat “Mad Jack,” and continue on his quest once more.
